The States of South Sudan were created out of the three historic former provinces of Bahr el Ghazal (northwest), Equatoria (southern), and Greater Upper Nile (northeast). The 32 states are further divided into 180 counties.
Aweil State is one of the 28 states of South Sudan formed on 2 October 2015. The state was created after the former 10 states split up. It is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it borders Gogrial to the east, Lol to the west, Aweil East to the north, and Wau to the south. Its largest city, Aweil, has a population of nearly 60,000 in 2008.

The capital of the state is Mayen-Abun, with an estimated population of around 2,000 people in city limits. Bona Panek is the current governor of the state, being appointed on 24 December 2015.
Gogrial State is one of the 28 states of South Sudan. It is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it borders Twic to the north, Aweil East to the northwest, Aweil to the west, Wau to the southwest, Tonj to the southeast, and Northern Liech to the northeast.
Eastern Lakes State is one of the 32 states of South Sudan. It is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it borders Southern Liech to the north, Western States to the west, Amadi to the southwest, Terekeka to the southeast, and Jonglei to the east.
Gok is one of the states of South Sudan. It is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region, and was formerly part of the Lakes State. Gok State borders Tonj to the west and Western Lakes to the east. The state had a population of 117,755 in 2008 and an estimated population of 174,460 in 2014.
Gbudwe State is one of the 28 states of South Sudan created on 2 October 2015. It is located in the Equatoria region and it is part of the former state of Western Equatoria. Gbudwe borders the states of Maridi, Tonj, Wau, and Western Lakes, and also the countries of Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of the Congo. The state had a population of 364,272 in 2008.
Imatong State is one of the 28 states of South Sudan. It is located in the Equatoria region and it borders Yei River to the southwest, Jubek to the west, Terekeka and Jonglei to the northwest, Boma to the northeast, Namorunyang to the east, and Uganda to the south.
Terekeka State is one of the 28 states of South Sudan. It is located in the Equatoria region and it borders Amadi, Eastern Lakes, Imatong, Jonglei, and Jubek. It has an estimated population of 176,030 in 2014, and the capital and largest city of the state is Terekeka, South Sudan.
Boma State is one of the 32 states of South Sudan formed on 2 October 2015. It is located in the Greater Upper Nile region and was formerly part of the state of Jonglei. The state borders the states of Eastern Bieh, Latjoor, Western Bieh, Western Nile, and the country of Ethiopia to the east.
Ruweng State is one of the 28 states of South Sudan. It is the most oil producing state in South Sudan, about 80% of South Sudanese oil is produced here, mainly in Unity oilfield, Heglig oilfield, Tomasouth oilfield and Toor oilfield. Ruweng State is rich in animal resources and fish resources, and it also is the home of two lakes: Lake Jau and Lake No, where Bahr el Ghazal River ends and joins the White Nile.
Southern Liech State is one of the states of South Sudan. It is located in the Greater Upper Nile region and it borders Northern Liech to the north, Western Bieh to the east, Jonglei to the southeast, Eastern Lakes to the south, Western Lakes to the southwest, and Tonj to the west.
Fangak State is one of the 32 states of South Sudan. It is located in the Greater Upper Nile region and it borders Ruweng to the northwest, Western Nile to the northeast, Eastern Nile to the east, Eastern Bieh to the southeast, Jonglei to the south, Southern Liech to the southwest, and Northern Liech to the west.
Fashoda State is one of the 32 states of South Sudan, formed on 2 October 2015. It is located in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan, and it borders the country of Sudan to the north, and the southern Sudanese states of Eastern Nile to the east, Western Bieh to the southwest, and Ruweng to the west.
Rezik Zechariah Hassan has been the Governor of Lol State, South Sudan since 24 December 2015. He is the first governor of the state, which was created by President Salva Kiir on 2 October 2015.
