Madrigal was a Canadian band who had a 1970 hit in two different charts with "I Believe in Sunshine". Their album also made the charts the following year.

Background

Formed in 1968, the Ontario group was made up of John Swainson on guitar, bass & vocals, Rick Henderson on guitar & vocals, Peter Boynton on piano, organ, bass, keyboards & vocals, and Don Simpson on drums. [1] [2]

The group was pictured on the front cover of the RPM Weekly October 17, 1970 issue. [3]

They had success with the single "I believe in Sunshine" which was produced by Greg Hambleton. [4] [5]

This group has no connection to the Los Angeles group Madrigal who released the single, "Need I Say" bw "Feelings Before" on Zipperman's Public! record label in 1970. [6]

Career

In early September 1970, the group was booked to appear at the Rock Hill Rock-In festival that ran from the 5th to the 6th. Other groups that were booked to appear there were Sound Spectrum from London, Ontario, Mud Flat from Toronto, and Pour Soul from England. [7] [8]

"I Believe in Sunshine"

The single, "I Believe in Sunshine" bw "Lady" was issued on Tuesday GH 102X in September 1970. [9] [10] Entering the chart at #94 on October 3, 1970, it peaked at #16 on the eighth week. It spent a total of seventeen weeks in the chart. [11] The single also got to #5 on the Top 50 MAPL Canadian chart on 24th of October. [12] The following week, the Top 50 MAPL chart became the Top 30 MAPL chart and the single was at #2. [13] It held the #2 spot for another two weeks but this time in the Top 20 MAPL Chart. [14] [15] By the 21st, the MAPL chart wasn't being published. The single at that time was at #16 in the RPM 100 chart. [16]

The single was issued in the US on SSS International SSS-824 . [17]

Album

It was mentioned in the December 10, 1970 issue of Billboard that their forthcoming album Sunshine and Baked Beans was to be released mid that month and would include the hit single. [18] The album was issued on Tuesday 1002. [19] The album made the RPM 100 Albums chart and got to #68 on February 13, 1971. [20] It got a release in the US as a self-titled album on SSS International SSS-18. [21] It was given a four star rating by Billboard in the magazine's July 3 issue. [22]

Further activities

In December 1970, Madrigal and Tuesday Records labelmates Steel River were ready to tour Quebec and the Maritimes. [23] Also they were to appear in a CKFH promoted charity-related concert that was held at Massey Hall on the 20th. Other artists on the list were Ronnie Hawkins, Everyday People, Steel River and Tommy Graham. [24]

They followed up with another single, "Hallelujah" bw "Freedom" which wasn't on the album. [25] [26] The US release was on SSS International SSS-845. [27]

In 1973 the group broke up. It was recreated in 1975 with a different line up. This only lasted a short time, and the group broke up again. Peter Boynton became part of the group Red Rider which included Tom Cochrane. [28]

Douglas Brian Riley, CM was a Canadian musician, also known as Dr. Music. He spent two decades with the Famous People Players as its musical director, besides his participation on over 300 album projects in various genres. Riley died of a heart attack on August 27, 2007.

Motherlode was a Canadian pop rock group formed in 1969 in London, Ontario. The group scored some success in the US with their single, "When I Die", which hit #1 in Canada and #18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969. The group didn't have a bass guitarist. William Smith would play the bass notes on his keyboard. They did however use bass players on their studio recordings.

Chester was a Canadian bubblegum pop band, active primarily from 1972 to 1975. Although they released only two singles in their original form before breaking up, the single "Make My Life a Little Bit Brighter" was a Top 10 hit on the Canadian pop charts in 1973 and the band garnered a Juno Award nomination for Most Promising Group at the Juno Awards of 1974.

Revolution Records was a Canadian Record company. It was also the parent company for the Revolver label. It had success with hits from artists such as Dianne Brooks and Motherlode.

"Dickens" was a hit for Canadian group Leigh Ashford in 1971. It was a track from their Kinfolk album that was released that year.

Natural Gas was a Canadian rock music group featuring a horn section. Consisting of eight members, it was formed by George Olliver. They released an album and a single in 1970. They had hit that year with "All Powerful Man". Their self-titled album also made the charts.

Christopher Kearney is a Canadian singer and songwriter who kicked off his career after military service. He had a hit in 1970 with "Theme for Jody". He had more chart success with the single "Loosen Up".

Young was a Canadian rock music group led by Roger Plomish.They released a few singles and an album during the 1970s. They had success with "Goin' to the Country" which was a hit in both Canada and the United States. Their album also spent about 14 weeks in the charts. The group may have been working on a second album prior to their break up.


Tapestry was an early 1970s Canadian musical group fronted by singers Jack Winters, Heather Woodburn and Judy Harmon aka Judi Jensen. They released several singles and had a hit with "The Music Doesn't Seem to Be Going Anywhere". Some of their other singles also charted.

Freedom North was a Canadian rock group that was active in the 1970s. Recording for Aquarius Records, they had hits with "Doctor Tom" and "Losing You".

Lisa Hartt is a Canadian singer and Juno Award nominee. She was the lead singer of The Lisa Hartt Band during the 1970s. They had a hit with "Old Time Movies". As a solo artist, she also had a radio hit with the single "Touch Me".

Poor Souls was a Scottish band who had a hit in the UK, broke up and then re-emerged as a Canadian band who recorded for the Quality Records label, and two hits in 1970 with "Lookin’ Round", and "Comin' Round". They also had another with "Land of the Few".

Jim Mancel was a Canadian singer, producer, composer and arranger who had several hits from the early 1970s and another in the early 1980s. He has recorded for the Polydor, Apex, and Quality labels, and Quality's subsidiary, Celebration. His hits include, "I Could Give You the World" which was a hit on the MAPL chart in 1970, and his 1975 single "Let the Phone Ring" which was also commercially successful in Canada. He hit the adult contemporary chart in 1977 with "Just Be Yourself". He was also a member of the Canadian band, Chester who had a hit in 1973 with "Make My Life a Little Bit Brighter".

I'm So Glad You're You (And Not Me) was the fourth single for Canadian group Motherlode. It got to #33 in the Top 50 MAPL Canadian chart, staying around for about six weeks.

"I Could Give You the World" was a chart hit for Jim Mancel in 1970. It won an award in Greece at the 3rd Olympiad of Song.

Aaron Space was a Canadian rock group that had a national hit with "Keep on Movin" in 1971. They had evolved out of a band called Mudflat.

Buckstone Hardware was a Canadian rock group who had a hit in 1969 with "Pack it In". It did well on the RPM 100 chart as well as the Canadian Content chart.
