Maija-Liisa Friman (born 1952) is a Finnish business executive who has served on the boards of several Finnish companies. [1] In recent years, the Finnish weekly magazine Talouselämä has listed her as one of the most powerful Finnish women in business. [2]

Talouselämä is a Finnish language weekly financial and business magazine published in Helsinki, Finland.

Friman attended the Helsinki University of Technology where she graduated in technology and chemical engineering in 1978. Since the mid-1980s, she has been involved in the areas of production, customer service and general management. As of September 2015, she is chair of the waste management company Ekokem and vice-chair of Neste, an oil refining company. She is a board member of Finnair, where she also sits on the audit committee, and a member of the board of the iron ore specialist, LKAB. Since 2009, she has actively contributed to Boardman, a Finnish executive management support company. [3]

Helsinki University of Technology former technical university in Finland

The Helsinki University of Technology was a technical university in Finland. It was located in Otaniemi, Espoo in the metropolitan area of Greater Helsinki. The university was founded in 1849 by Grand Duke Nicholas I and received university status in 1908. It moved from Helsinki to Otaniemi campus area in 1966. It was merged into Aalto University in 2010 and briefly had the name Aalto University School of Science and Technology before being split into four schools in 2011.

Neste Finnish oil refining and marketing company

Neste Oyj, is an oil refining and marketing company located in Espoo, Finland. It produces, refines and markets oil products and provides engineering services, as well as licensing production technologies. Neste has operations in 14 countries and employs over 5,000 people. The company is the largest producer of renewable diesel in the world.

Finnair is the flag carrier and largest airline of Finland, with its headquarters in Vantaa on the grounds of Helsinki Airport, its hub. Finnair and its subsidiaries dominate both domestic and international air travel in Finland. Its major shareholder is the government of Finland, which owns 55.8% of the shares. Finnair is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. In 2017, it transported about 12 million passengers to over 100 European, 20 Asian and 7 North American destinations. At the end of 2017, the airline employed 5,918 people.

Over the years Friman has served as an executive in the public and private sectors. She has held senior positions at Metso Minerals, Empower, SYK, Finnish Industry Investment, Finish Medical Foundation, Valmet Technologies, Helsinki Deaconess Institute Foundation, Helsinki University of Technology, Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance, Aspocomp, Vattenfall, Gyproc, Kemira, Talvivaara Mining, Metso, TeliaSonera, Sponda and Rautaruukki. Metso Oyj is a Finnish industrial machinery company focusing on providing technology and services for mining, aggregates, and oil and gas, recycling, pulp and paper and other process industries. The company employs over 13,000 people in 50 countries. Metso's shares are listed on the NASDAQ OMX Helsinki, Finland.

Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu, commonly abbreviated SYK, is a free Finnish private school located in the district of Etelä-Haaga in the city of Helsinki.

Valmet Oyj is a Finnish company and a developer and supplier of technologies, automation systems and services for the pulp, paper and energy industries. Valmet’s history as an industrial operator stretches back over 200 years. Formerly owned by the State of Finland, Valmet was reborn in December 2013 with the demerger of the pulp, paper and power businesses from Metso Corporation. Valmet is organized around four business lines: Services, Pulp and Energy, Paper, and Automation. Valmet's services include maintenance outsourcing, mill and power plant improvements and spare parts. The company provides technology for pulp, tissue, board and paper mills and bioenergy plants. In the area of automation, Valmet's solutions range from single measurements to mill wide turnkey automation projects. Valmet's operations are divided into five geographical areas: North America, South America, EMEA, China, and Asia-Pacific. Valmet has operations in approximately 30 countries and it employs 12,000 people. Its headquarters are located in Espoo, and it is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki. In 2017, Valmet's net sales totaled EUR 3.2 billion.

She is wanted by the Interpol after a request by Finnish officials. Her location in Switzerland is known to Finnish police and press. The civil and criminal lawsuits around the case are still largely open, and some of the lawsuits can not be continued without the presence of Mrs. Lahtinen. In 2006 the court declared Mrs. Lahtinen bankrupt, because she had been ordered to compensate over 13 million euros to Urpo Lahtinen's undistributed estate in one of the lawsuits.

Maija Isola Finnish designer of printed textiles for Marimekko

Maija Sofia Isola was a Finnish designer of printed textiles, creating over 500 patterns including Unikko ("Poppy"). Her bold colourful designs made the home furnishings and fashion company Marimekko famous in the 1960s. She also had a career as a visual artist.
