Plot

Charlotte or "Charlie" has inherited an auto service shop in Oakland from her father, where she also works as a mechanic. During her free time, she uses the alias "GreaseMnky" on an online forum to chat with "Bullnose" about car related issues. Unbeknownst to her, the handle belongs to a man called Beau, who is a manager for a big car company, Miller Boys, that has opened operations across the street from Charlie to compete against her.

When Charlie is at her shop with her friends Cam and Izzy, Beau comes in to see his friend Jordan finish up his manicure with Izzy and they discuss Miller Boys' new location that might pose problems for Charlie's business. However, Beau does not disclose that he works at Miller Boys. Upon leaving the shop, Beau talks to his girlfriend Lola, who appears disinterested in him. Later, Beau is having drinks at a bar when he sees Charlie and invites her to play pool - with a wager. She beats him handily, as she has been playing the game since she was a child.

Mr. Miller hears Beau's pitch regarding Electric Vehicles being the future, and agrees to look into it. Charlie visits Miller Boys, and sees Beau there. When some employees refer to him as "boss", she sees his badge showing that he is a Miller Boy, and is upset that he didn't reveal that when they first met. Charlie changes a tire faster than a competitor there - proof that she is a very good mechanic. Back at her home, she confides the events of the day to her friend Bullnose in the online chat room, still unaware that it is actually her rival Beau.

A TV crew interviews Charlie, and she states that her father built the shop for the community - they are an all-female crew, and won't be bullied by a heartless corporation. A concerned woman complains to Miller boys about their putting a small enterprise out of business, but it's justified as a side-effect of Capitalism. Charlie slowly begins to realize that she can't compete with low prices.

Having chatted with Bullnose for a while, Charlie decides to meet up with him at a restaurant. Upon arriving at the restaurant, Beau sees that his date is actually Charlie, but approaches her as Beau instead of Bullnose. He guesses that she's on a blind date, and proposes dinner with her instead of her missing date - who stood her up. She spurns him, and leaves the restaurant, texting Bullnose to never speak to her again.

Bullnose pleads to be forgiven, but Charlie ignores him. An investor buys a classic car that was restored by Charlie, and she cries to her friends that she wants the shop to be in the hands of someone who loves it the same way she does. She decides to give Bullnose a second chance and agrees to meet him at a coffee place. Beau arrives there, and again without disclosing his online identity, invites her to a show on classic cars. The next day, Mr. Miller is happy that Oakland is now among their top locations. He wants to conquer all of North America, but Beau quits because he doesn't want to do this anymore.

Charlie goes to the classic cars show, where she sees Beau and they connect over her photographs of the cars. She admits she enjoyed the day, and they drive out together, but are forced to stop at a scenic place near the ocean as Beau's car gets overheated. She offers him a ride to Beau's home, and they share a romantic moment, but she sees the car she recently sold in his garage, and realizes that Beau is in fact Bullnose. She tells him she feels like an idiot for not recognizing this earlier, and drives away saying she can never trust him again.

One month later, Beau and Charlie have stopped communicating. Cam is working at a local cafeteria, and informs Charlie that Beau quit weeks ago because he developed a corporate conscience, probably because he was afraid of losing Charlie, who agrees that she now misses Beau. She calls him, but gets his voicemail saying he's on a road trip. She goes to see Jordan who direct her to a diner, and she drives there and sees him seated at a table. She casually asks the customers if anyone might know how to change a tire. They start talking, and Beau divulges that he left Miller Boys, and is sorry he wasn't honest with her before. He's now closing a deal on a '68 Dodger that needs a lot of work, and wonders if Charlie would be willing to fix the car up together. He picks her up and they drive away together.

A year later, Charlie feels that someone, possibly her dad, is looking out for her, and is happily working with Beau on a car.
