Maria McQueen Dunn (born March 6, 1986) is a freestyle wrestler from Guam. She participated in Women's freestyle 63 kg at 2008 Summer Olympics losing to Elina Vaseva. She also competed in the same division at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and lost to competitor Lubov Volosova. Maria Dunn has won ten Oceania Championships in women's freestyle wrestling.

Biography

Early life and education

Maria Dunn was born March 6, 1986, in Tamuning, Guam. [1] Dunn wrestled on her high school team. [2] Dunn's mother was worried, saying "I tried to stop her because I'm afraid for her". [2] Her mother tried to get her into modeling, enrolling her into classes, but Dunn chose wrestling instead. Dunn's mother relented and allowed her to join the wrestling team. [3]

Dunn was the first female college wrestler to receive an athletic scholarship at Missouri Valley College. [4] She attended the university from 2004 to 2008. [5] Dunn graduated with a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Guam in 2011. [6]

Olympic career

Dunn was the first-ever Guamanian female wrestler to participate in the Olympic Games, via invitational slot or 'wild card'. [7] She was the flagbearer for the Opening Ceremonies of the Games. [8] Dunn finished in last place during the 2008 Summer Olympics in the women's freestyle 63 kg. [9]

Dunn qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics with a tripartite allocation. If the rules were the same as in 2008, she would have qualified after she won the 2012 Oceania Wrestling Championships. [10] Dunn was one of three female wrestlers to receive a tripartite allocation, and the only female wrestler from Oceania to receive one. [11] She trained for the 2012 Summer Olympics with Roy Wood in the city of Wigan, and stayed with his family while practicing freestyle wrestling. While training in England, Maria met her future husband, English wrestler Nathan Tully. [12] She was the flagbearer for Guam during the Opening Ceremonies, during which time she was pregnant with her first child. [13] Dunn was pinned by Russian Lubov Volosova early in the match. Dunn believed only one of her shoulders were down, which would mean she was not pinned, and believed the official called the pin because it was near the end of the period. [14]

International career

Dunn won silver at the 2002 Oceania Championships, [15] and won gold at the 2007, [16] 2008, [17] and 2010 Oceania Championships. [18] Dunn was named the outstanding female wrestler of the 2010 Oceania Championships. She did not lose a single match between the 2002 and 2011 Oceania Championships, and decided to move up a weight class to have more competition. She lost to New Zealand's Tayla Ford in the championship match of the 2011 Oceania Championships and took home a silver medal. [19] She also won the 2012 Oceania Wrestling Championships, moving back to the 63 kg weight class. [20] [21]

Personal life

Maria married English wrestler Nathan Tully and the pair set up home together on Maria's home island of Guam. They co founded Snakepit Wrestling Academy Guam to teach Wrestling to children and young people. Their daughter, Marleya Louise, was born in 2012 and their son, Tyson Avoca, was born in 2015. Maria is a teacher and artist. She currently resides in Yigo, Guam, with her 2 children and her mother. Her husband, Nathan, died in July 2020 aged 32 after a battle with oral cancer.

Pilar Shimizu is a Guamanian breaststroke swimmer. While qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics she broke the 20-year-old national record set by Tammie Kaae, another Olympian from Guam. At these Olympics she became the youngest Olympian ever from Guam at age 16. She finished 42nd in the 100 meter breaststroke event and did not advance to the semifinals. Shimizu also competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Internationally, Shimizu has earned three bronze medals at the Oceania Games and two silver medals at the Pacific Games.

Amy Atkinson is a sprinter and middle-distance runner and former association football player from Guam. She competed in the 2010 Guam Athletics Championships where she won three gold medals. Atkinson took part in the 2011 Pacific Games, where she broke the national record for the Women's 3000m steeplechase event, which she still holds. Atkinson represented Guam in Istanbul at the Women's 400m event at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Atkinson also competed in the Women's 800m event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but did not advance to the semifinals. She broke the national 800m record with a time of 2:18.53.

Benjamin Anthony Aguon Schulte is a Guamanian swimmer. Schulte entered the international stage at 15 years old when he won a silver medal at the 2011 Pacific Games held in New Caledonia. At the 2014 Micronesian Games, Schulte was awarded medals in all 11 of his events, nine of them gold, earning him the nickname 'Micro Phelps'. At the 2015 Pacific Games, he won gold in the 200m and 400m medley, silver in the 100m breaststroke, setting a Games record in the heats that was later broken by the gold medalist in the final, and bronze in the 200m breaststroke. At the 2016 Oceania Swimming Championships, Schulte earned a gold and a silver medal.

Marwa Al-Amri is a Tunisian freestyle wrestler. She was born in Tunis. She represented Tunisia in the women's lightweight freestyle competition at the 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. She is the first woman from Africa win an Olympic medal in wrestling.

Aminat Oluwafunmilayo Adeniyi is a Nigerian freestyle wrestler. She competed in the women's freestyle 58 kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where she won a gold medal.

Regine Tugade-Watson is a Guamanian sprinter. She competed in the women's 100 metres event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China, as well as the girl's 200 m event at the 2015 World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia. She competed in the women's 100 m preliminary round of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Tugade finished third place in her heat but did not progress further. She also competed in her second World Championships in 2017, competing in the 200 m. She holds seven Guamanian national records in athletics. In July 2021 she was a flag bearer in the Parade of Nations at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony.
