Mark Elder (born December 10, 1977) is an American football coach. He was the head football coach at Eastern Kentucky University from 2016 until 2019. Prior to his tenure at Eastern Kentucky, Elder was an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. [1]
Elder graduated from Sycamore High School in 1996, and played football at Case Western Reserve. [2] He began his coaching career with stops at Akron, Lehigh, Iona, Wayne State (MI), and Michigan before he was hired as an assistant football coach at Central Michigan by head coach Butch Jones. [2] When Jones was named head coach at Cincinnati in 2010, Elder was named as an assistant. [3] Elder subsequently followed Jones to Tennessee as an assistant coach in 2013. [4]
On December 8, 2015, it was reported that Elder was to be named head football coach at Eastern Kentucky University. [5] He was formally introduced at a press conference on December 10, 2015. [6] When he began his duties as head coach, he also continued to serve as an assistant coach at Tennessee through the completion of the Outback Bowl. [7]
In four years at EKU, Elder recorded four straight top-25 rated recruiting classes. In 2018, he led the program to a 7–4 record, recording their most wins since the 2014 season. [8]
Prior to the 2019 season, the Elder-led Colonels were named to preseason Top 25 lists by Lindy's Sports [9] and Hero Sports. [10] Additionally, Elder was named as a leading preseason candidate for the Eddie Robinson Award, given to the national coach of the year at the FCS level. [11]
Elder's contract at EKU was not renewed after finishing 7-4 and 7-5 in his final two seasons and failing to make the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. [12]
On December 19, 2019, Elder returned to his hometown of Cincinnati to become the new head coach at Moeller HS. [13]
On February 3, 2023, Elder announced that he resigned from Moeller HS. [14]
Elder and his wife, Lindsey, have two sons, Owen and Ellis, and one daughter, Lila. [15]

The 2002 team was the FCS national champion. The program has 13 conference championships and 6 FBS-level bowl game victories. The Hilltoppers play their home games at Houchens Industries–L. T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Kentucky and the team's head football coach is Tyson Helton.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels football program represents Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in college football, competing at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level as a member of the United Athletic Conference (UAC). The school has traditionally had much success on the football field, having won 21 OVC conference titles and two Division I FCS National Championships in 1979 and 1982, and reaching the finals in 1980 and 1981. Much of the success came during the long tenure of head coach Roy Kidd from 1964 to 2002. In 1990, Eastern honored Kidd by naming the school's football stadium Roy Kidd Stadium. Eastern Kentucky's football team was able to secure 31 consecutive winning seasons before finally posting a losing season record in 2009.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), located in Richmond, Kentucky, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the NCAA Division I ranks, primarily competing in the ASUN Conference since the 2021–22 academic year. Its football team competes in the United Athletic Conference (UAC), which starts play in 2023 as a football-only merger of the ASUN and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Colonels previously competed in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) from 1948–49 to 2020–21.

He was the head football coach at Murray State University from 2020 to 2023 and at Eastern Kentucky University from 2008 to 2015. Steven L. Bird is an American football special teams coordinator for South Carolina State. He played college football for Eastern Kentucky where he was named to the First-Team All-OVC and won two Division I-AA national championship games in 1979 and 1982. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). He also played for the San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cincinnati Bengals and the Edmonton Eskimos and Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Papa Kwaku Oppong is a Canadian former professional basketball player in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL). He is currently a teacher at an unknown school in Ontario. Oppong competed with three different college basketball teams from 2006 to 2010. He played with Coffeyville Community College as a freshman, Panola Junior College as a sophomore, and Eastern Kentucky of the NCAA Division I as a junior and senior.
The Eastern Kentucky Colonels women's basketball team is a women's college basketball team at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), located in Richmond, Kentucky, United States. After having played women's basketball in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) since it began sponsoring women's sports in 1977, and also having been an OVC member since the conference's formation in 1948, EKU joined the ASUN Conference in July 2021. Home games are played at Alumni Coliseum.
The 2017–18 Eastern Kentucky Colonels men's basketball team represented Eastern Kentucky University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Colonels, led by third-year head coach Dan McHale, played their home games at McBrayer Arena within Alumni Coliseum as members of the Ohio Valley Conference. They finished the season 11–20, 5–13 in OVC play to finish in a three-way tie for ninth place. They failed to make the OVC tournament for the third consecutive season.
