Marsol (chestnut)

Marsol (aka Marisol) is a natural chestnut hybrid, a cross between a European chestnut (Castanea sativa) and Japanese (Castanea crenata) (CA 07).

INRA produced this variety from Lalevade-d'Ardèche. It is mainly used as a rootstock because of its good graft compatibility with many varieties. As a rootstock, it is more vigorous than Maraval (equal to Bouche de Betizac or Comballe).

Trees are resistant to rust and roots have some resistance to ink disease. Marsol is the most sensitive chestnut cultivary to Dryocosmus kuriphilus - the chestnut gall wasp, and very sensitive to the codling moth, [1] fairly sensitive to root asphyxiation, resistant to mosaic virus, slightly susceptible to chestnut blight.

Trees are of medium height with a long trunk and branches higher up. Early bud breaks makes the shoot development sensitive to spring frosts. The male catkins flower from June 19–30 June followed by female flowers June 27 - July 8. The male catkins are pollen sterile.

Nut production of grafted trees is medium with higher production on seedling trees. Nut production starts at four to five years. The triangular nuts are mid season ripening - shiny red mahogany in color. They keep and peel well. The nuts can be used fresh or for processing. The nut taste is described as lower quality. Occurrence of double embryos (pericarp splitting) is less than 5%.

Vegetative multiplication is quite easy.

Maraval produces a big mahogany colored nut from triangular to elliptical triangular shape. The nut keeps well. Nut peeling is mediocre but good in boiling water. Nuts can be used fresh as well as for processing.

Bouche de Bétizac is a French chestnut cultivar developed in 1962 by INRA at the station of Malemort-sur-Corrèze near Brive. It is a controlled hybrid between Castanea sativa and Castanea crenata. This variety produces large to very large chestnuts. It has very good flavor for a hybrid. With Marigoule, it is the variety currently most cultivated in the French chestnut groves because it is very productive. Its fruit is bright, light chestnut-brown quickly turning brown and dark brown.

Marigoule is the name of a french hybrid of chestnut, cross between a European chestnut and Japanese. In 1986, it originated from a Migoule orchard in Ussac in Corrèze. Marigoule is a very tasty chestnut. It should be planted in rather low altitude in very sunny areas and protected from the wind. Otherwise its productivity remains small. In France, it is grown mainly South of the Dordogne and Lot-et-Garonne for the fresh market production because of the nuts beautiful appearance.

The Precoce Migoule is a chestnut hybrid, a natural cross between a European chestnut and a Japanese chestnut. It was discovered by J. Dufrenoy at the orchard of Migoule in Brive-la-Gaillarde. The tree is vigorous and erect growing with growth of a metre or more in a season if the conditions are right. It is a large sized chestnut tree with height reaching 20 m or more and 7.5-10 m wide. Trees start to bear after 3 to 5 years. Full nut production in 12 - 20 years depending on the location.

Comballe is a French traditional chestnut variety. In France, it is the variety with the largest production. This beautiful rustic nut of Ardèche origin has a bright, streaky chestnut colour. Its fine, sweet and fragrant flesh justifies the excellent taste reputation.

The chestnut cultivar Colossal originates from the USA - California Central Valley. It is a Castanea sativa × Castanea crenata hybrid that is cold hardy to −20 °F (−29 °C). The tree can be grown in Zones 4-8, blooms early, and is pollen sterile. Colossal is chestnut blight, root rot and kernel rot susceptible.

Gnomoniopsis castaneae is a fungus of the order Diaporthales that is the most important cause of brown chestnut rot, an emerging disease that damages the fruit of chestnuts. It also causes cankers and necrosis on leaves and on chestnut galls caused by the gall wasp, Dryocosmus kuriphilus. Additionally, it can cause cankers on other chestnut species, red oak, hazelnut trees, less severe damage to some nut trees, and lives as an endophyte on other nut trees. The disease has been reported in Europe, Oceania, and has recently been found in North America; for this reason, the fungus is considered a potential threat to the reintroduction of the American chestnut.

Tambaguri is a general term for Japanese chestnuts grown mainly in the Tanba and Sasayama regions of Japan. In general, it is known for its fine Japanese chestnuts with large fruits also called Ouguri. The representative cultivars are Ginyose and Tsukuba, which used to be called 'Ginyu' and 'Ginzen', but are now unified as 'Ginyose'.
