She made her screen debut as a child artist in B.R. Chopra's Karm (1977), and later appeared in Shekhar Kapur's critically acclaimed Masoom (1983). After making her debut as the heroine in 1989 Malayalam thriller Chanakyan, Urmila began a full-time acting career, with a leading role in the 1991 action Narsimha. She rose to prominence with Ram Gopal Varma's blockbuster Rangeela (1995). Her portrayal of an aspiring actress, Mili Joshi, opposite Aamir Khan received praise from critics, and garnered her first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

The novel had two other film adaptations: the 1983 American film of the same title and the 1982 Malayalam film Olangal. Illalu Priyuralu was produced by G. Babu under Babu Arts and featured Sobhan Babu, Suhasini, Pallavi and Master Arjun in the lead roles. The film has musical score by Chakravarthy.
"Tujhse Naaraz Nahi Zindagi" is an Indian Hindi song from the Bollywood film Masoom (1983). The lyrics of the song was written by Gulzar, and composed by R. D. Burman. The song has two different versions — female, and male, and were sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Anup Ghoshal resepectively. In 1984, Gulzar won a Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist for this song.
