Matt Merritt is an American football coach and former player who currently serves as the running backs coach at the University of Miami.
Merritt played high school football at Canal Winchester High School in Canal Winchester, Ohio.
Merritt continued his playing career at Capital University, a Division III school in Columbus, Ohio, where he was a running back from 2006 to 2009. During his collegiate career, Merritt amassed 1,099 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, contributing to Capital's appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Merritt began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as a running backs coach. He then spent two years coaching at the high school level before joining Ohio Dominican University as the running backs coach in 2016. In 2017, Merritt was hired as the running backs coach at Elon University, where he coached a trio of backs who combined for 1,894 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first season. In 2018, Merritt joined James Madison University as an assistant coach, working primarily with the running backs. He then served as the running backs coach at Georgia Southern University in 2022. In December 2022, Merritt was named the associate head coach and run game coordinator at the University of South Florida (USF). During his tenure at USF, the Bulls achieved a significant turnaround, culminating in a 45-0 victory over Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl. In February 2024, Merritt was appointed as the running backs coach at the University of Miami under head coach Mario Cristobal. Throughout his coaching career, Merritt has participated in the Bill Walsh Minority Fellowships, working with the Cincinnati Bengals' running backs in 2016 and the San Francisco 49ers' quarterbacks in 2019.
Merritt earned his bachelor's degree in education from Capital University in 2010, followed by master's degrees in sport management from Ohio State University and coaching education from Ohio University, both in 2016. He is married to the former Brittanie Duty, and the couple has a son named Daniel.
