Mendefera Subregion is a subregion in the Debub (Southern) region (Zoba Debub) of Eritrea. Its capital lies at Mendefera.

Southern Region (Eritrea) Region of Eritrea

Debub Region, also known as the South Region, is a region of Eritrea. The region was formed on 15 April 1996, from the historical provinces of Serae and Akele Guzai. It lies along a portion of the national border with Ethiopia. As of 2005, the region had a population of 952,100 compared to a population of 839,700 in 2001. The net growth rate was 11.81 per cent. The total area of the province was 8000.00 km2 and the density was 119.01 persons per km2. The highest point in Eritrea, is Mount Soira 3,018 m (9,902 ft), is located in the region, situated east of Senafe. It shares borders with Central Region in the north, Zoba Northern Red Sea in the east, Gash Barka in the west and Ethiopia in the south. It is the largest region in the country by population. The People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), an single party government, supports the country and the region. The regional and local elections are conducted on a periodic basis. All men and women of any ethnic or religious background are eligible to vote. Since the arms struggle the citizens of Eritrea have trusted Isaias Afwerki who has led the country since 1971, Eritrean nationalists have donated millions of dollars toward the PFDJ party in 2020.

Mendefera Town in Debub, Eritrea

Mendefera, formerly Adi Ugri, is an ancient town which is now the capital city of the Southern Region or Zoba Debub of Eritrea. The town's name derives from the high hill in the center of the city and it means that "who dared it"(in English)or "መን ደፈራ"( in Tigrinya) as it was a jungle and is a source of pride to Eritreans. The city is a reminder of the local anti-colonial movement.

The six regions of Eritrea are divided into administrative subregions.

Serae

Serae ሰራየ is a former province of Eritrea which had an estimated population of 515,000 in 1990 and an area of 7,100 km2 (2,700 sq mi). The province is home to three of the Eritrean ethnic groups namely the Tigrinyas, Jeberti, Tigre, and Saho. It has since been incorporated primarily into the Debub Region, though some western districts have become part of the Gash-Barka Region. It is believed that the name of the province is from the "dark forests" which once thrived on its fertile ground.

Asmat Subregion Subregion in Anseba, Eritrea

Areza Town in Debub, Eritrea

Areza is a town in the Debub (Southern) region of Eritrea. It is the capital of the Areza Subregion. It lies to the west of Mendefera. The area is primarily agricultural and contains 20 kebabis.

Tsorona is a subregion in the southern Debub region of Eritrea. Its old name was Atkaro. The area was a major battle zone during the Eritrean-Ethiopian War and has been a source of territorial dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia about Tsorona-Zalambessa.

Adi-Ada/:ትግርኛ/ዓዲ ዓዳ is a village of the former historical province of Seraye, which is located 7 km southeast to the city of Mendefera in present Southern Region of the state of Eritrea. The village has an age of at least 500 years, which is composed of four families called Enda Tesfit, Enda Nayzgi, Enda Oqubay and Enda Andehans who are founding fathers of the village Adi-Ada which has more than 300 households and an estimated population of 1,500 people.
