Michael Coyle (born 5 August 1948) is a Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician in Northern Ireland,serving as a Causeway Coast and Glens Councillor for the Benbradagh DEA since 2023. Coyle was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Londonderry from 2002 to 2003.
Born in Dungiven,Coyle attended St Columb's College in Derry and the Belfast College of Technology. He worked as a telephone engineer for British Telecom,and was elected to Limavady Borough Council in the 1993 local elections,for the Benbradagh District,as an SDLP representative. [1]
In 1996 he was an unsuccessful candidate in the Northern Ireland Forum election in East Londonderry. [2] Following the resignation of Northern Ireland Assembly member Arthur Doherty on 1 September 2002,Coyle was co-opted on to the body,representing East Londonderry. He stood in the constituency in the 2003 Assembly election,but was not elected. [3]
Coyle retained his council seat in the 2005 and 2011 elections,but lost his seat on the newly-formed Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council at the 2014 election. [4] He was elected back to the council for Benbradagh at the 2023 local elections. [5]
Limavady is a market town in County Londonderry,Northern Ireland,with Binevenagh as a backdrop. Lying 17 miles (27 km) east of Derry and 14 miles (23 km) southwest of Coleraine,Limavady had a population of 11,279 people at the 2021 Census. In the 40 years between 1971 and 2011,Limavady's population nearly doubled. Limavady is within Causeway Coast and Glens Borough.
Dungiven is a small town,townland and civil parish in County Londonderry,Northern Ireland. It is near the main A6 Belfast to Derry road,which bypasses the town. It lies where the rivers Roe,Owenreagh and Owenbeg meet at the foot of the 1,525 ft (465 m) Benbradagh. Nearby is the Glenshane Pass,where the road rises to over 1,000 ft (300 m). It had a population of 3,346 people in the 2021 Census. It is within Causeway Coast and Glens district council area.
