Mission City Roller Derby is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Santa Barbara, California. Founded in 2009, Mission City is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). [1]

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating counter-clockwise around a track. Roller derby is played by approximately 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide, mostly inside the United States.

Santa Barbara, California City in California, United States

Santa Barbara is the county seat of Santa Barbara County in the U.S. state of California. Situated on a south-facing section of coastline, the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States, the city lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Santa Barbara's climate is often described as Mediterranean, and the city has been promoted as the "American Riviera". As of 2014, the city had an estimated population of 91,196, up from 88,410 in 2010, making it the second most populous city in the county after Santa Maria. History

Mission City Roller Derby was founded in 2009. [2] The league's A-team, the Brawlin' Betties, competed in their first home bout on July 18, 2009 against the Ventura County Derby Darlins. [3]

Ventura County Derby Darlins

Ventura County Derby Darlins (VCDD) is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Camarillo, California. Founded in 2007, the league consists of two teams, which compete against teams from other leagues. Ventura County is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

Mission City Roller Derby became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2013. [4]

The league entered the WFTDA Apprentice Program in January 2015, [5] and was made a full member in September of the same year. [6]

WFTDA Apprentice Program

The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice is the program affiliate of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In operation from 2009 until early 2019, the Apprentice Program served to onboard new member leagues into the WFTDA. In February 2019, the WFTDA announced it was retiring the program, to be replaced with a new "New Member Program" in the near future.
