Monique Brumby is the self-titled fifth studio album by Australian singer songwriter, and ARIA Award winner, Monique Brumby. It was released physically and digitally in January 2014. [1]
Brumby toured the album across Australia throughout 2014. [2] [3]
Since the release of 2010's Skeletons' Polka , Brumby became the creative director for Aardvark, a not-for-profit community organisation that provides a music program for young people with chronic illness, working alongside Gotye. Brumby told the Sydney Morning Herald “That was the turning point for me, now working with youth seems to follow me around. It feels really great to be able to help young people because I realise that I needed that when I was their age. My relationship with music is now vastly different. I’m much more confident with expressing my music. I don’t really think that I came into my full understanding of that till my mid 30s.” Brumby reflected saying she is now simply being herself, hence the album's self-titled. [4]
Brumby said the album took three years to make and she said out of all of her albums, she is most proud of this one. She said "The songs reflect my feelings around being an outsider, wanting to build a sense of community in a world that can be isolating for so many. Songs about the human condition, the folly of youth and overcoming adversity." She said her favourite track on the album is "In This Game", "...an electro track about lost highways and trying to stay awake at the wheel of your own life." She said "The single 'Silent War' is a love song that happens to be about the union between two women. It reflects my views on the status of marriage equality in Australia, and that I would really like to see same sex couples recognised under the marriage act." [5]
Meg Crawford of Beat Magazine called the album "Splendid" saying; "This is a beautiful collection of tracks, all delivered in Monique Brumby’s unmistakably glorious, unique voice – covering love, loss and the stuff of other human problems. It’s paying definite homage to the ‘80s. While earlier releases were more in your alt-country/pop/rock vein, this is almost exclusively ‘80s driven synth/electro pop, overlaid with her beautiful voice. It’s different, but it’s good different. " [6]
Haydn Levette of Pearl HQ said; "The self-titled effort sees Brumby reach exciting new heights. It’s creative, raw and full of passion. The fact that the better half of the album was recorded in the spare room of her Melbourne house, using a make-shift[sic] vocal booth, really allows you to appreciate the lengths she’s gone to and the final product. This album has so much more to give than just its production quality. The music is soothing in a way. Each song has its own voice, holding its own against a raft of exciting material." [7]
Diana Anaid is the performance name of Diana Gosper, an Australian alternative rock singer-songwriter. From 1997 to 2003 she used the moniker, Diana ah Naid. Anaid has issued five studio albums, Diana ah Naid, I Don't Think I'm Pregnant, Beautiful ObsceneDiana Anaid (2010) and My Queen (2017). 2007 also saw the release of Diana Anaid's first live album "Live At Bush Theatre" which was recorded in her home town of Nimbin, NSW.
Petra Linnea Paula Marklund, known also by her previous stage name September, is a Swedish singer, songwriter, and television presenter. Marklund started recording in professional studios around the age of twelve, and first came to the attention of the music scene with September's debut single "La La La " in 2003, released from her studio album September (2004).
Lisa Helen Mitchell is an Australian musician and singer-songwriter who grew up in Albury, New South Wales. Mitchell currently lives in Melbourne and is working on her fourth studio album. Mitchell finished sixth in the 2006 season of Australian Idol. Her debut extended play, Said One to the Other, topped iTunes in Australia and she signed with London-based publisher, Little Victories, a subsidiary of Sony/ATV. By 2008 Mitchell had relocated to the UK where she recorded her debut studio album, Wonder, which peaked at No. 6 on the ARIA Albums Chart. She won the 2009 Australian Music Prize of $30,000 for the album. Mitchell returned to Australia to live in Melbourne. Her second album, Bless This Mess reached No. 7. In March 2015, Mitchell's last single "Wah Ha" was remixed by electronic trio Seekae. Her third album Warriors was released on 16 October 2016 and debuted Top 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Nick Larkins is an Australian rock musician who has played with various Australian acts, and solo. Nick was born in London but raised in Hobart, Tasmania. Larkins has been highly nomadic for much of his career. He has usually been based in the city of Melbourne, known as the live music capital of Australia, but has also lived and worked in Europe several times.
Samantha Jade Gibbs is an Australian singer and songwriter. She has written tracks for artists including JoJo and Ashley Tisdale. In 2012, Jade won the fourth season of The X Factor Australia, the first woman to win the Australian series. She subsequently signed with Sony Music Australia and released her winner's single "What You've Done to Me", which debuted at number one on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Singles Chart. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Tinashe moved to Pasadena, California, as a child, where she pursued work in entertainment. Her notable roles include a motion-capture performance in the animated film The Polar Express (2004), Robin Wheeler in the Cartoon Network television series Out of Jimmy's Head (2007–2008), and a recurring role in the CBS series Two and a Half Men (2008–2009). From 2007 to 2011, she was a member of the girl group the Stunners. After they disbanded, Tinashe released her first musical project, the alternative R&B-styled mixtape In Case We Die (2012) to positive critical reception, and signed with RCA Records shortly after.
