Monroe is situated on the picturesque inland waterway of Smith Sound, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. The community was named Monroe when the two settlements of Rocky Brook and Upper Rocky Brook amalgamated in 1912 and was named for the merchant Walter Stanley Monroe, of St. John's, who later became the Prime Minister of the Dominion of Newfoundland from 1924 to 1928.
Monroe was first settled by Henry and Patience (née Meagher) Stone in 1853 and the couple brought their six, at that time, children to live with them. Henry and Patience Stone had 4 more children in the next 5 years, with Emmanuel baptized January 23,1854 being the first child to be born after the couple founded the community of Rocky Brook, now called Monroe today, in 1853.
The 6 children Henry and Patience brought to the community with them were Rebecca and Elizabeth who Henry had with his dead first wife Mary Spurrell, and the couple’s 4 daughters Mary, Naomi, Caroline and Emily. The 4 children born after they moved to Rocky Brook/Monroe were Emmanuel, Alfred John, Mary and Christina.

Cuper's Cove, on the southwest shore of Conception Bay on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula was an early English settlement in the New World, and the third one after Harbour Grace, Newfoundland (1583) and Jamestown, Virginia (1607) to endure for longer than a year. It was established in 1610 by John Guy on behalf of Bristol's Society of Merchant Venturers, who had been given a charter by King James I of England to establish a colony on the island of Newfoundland. Most of the settlers left in the 1620s, but apparently a few stayed on and the site was continuously inhabited.

Rose Blanche – Harbour le Cou is a small town on Newfoundland's southwest shore, about 45 km at the end of Route 470 from Port aux Basques. This community is located in a barren area on the east side of a small bay. In this bay there are 2 harbours that were mainly used to provide shelter for fishing vessels. Scenery includes the rugged granite coastline, and the white and rocky cliffs of "Diamond Cove". Its granite lighthouse was in operation from 1873 to the 1940s. After it was abandoned in the 1940s the building fell into ruins. The spiral stone staircase extends into the tower wall and kept the tower from collapsing while the remainder of the lighthouse fell to ruin. In 1999 the lighthouse was fully reconstructed and serves as a tourist attraction.
Maberly is a tiny coastal hamlet at the end of route 238-II on the Bonavista Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland with a permanent year-round population of about 20. In the 1921 census, there were 83 inhabitants. It has long been associated with nearby Elliston, being about 3 km from Elliston Centre by road, and was officially annexed by that town in the 1960s. Driving from Elliston Centre to Maberly, you pass through Sandy Cove and the Neck.

Settled in the early 1890s it was originally known as Shoal Bay, presumably from its many shallow coves and inlets in the area. From the 1950s to the 1970 Shoal Bay was referred to as Wellington , whereas the local residents called it Dover.

Bonavista Peninsula is to the north of the sound, while Random Island is to the south. The waters that make up the sound is a continuous channel that encircles Random Island, broken only by a narrow channel located at Clarenville where a causeway was built to provide access to the communities on Random Island. The channel on the south side of Random Island is North West Arm.
