James Joseph Phelan was an American college basketball coach. He is best known for his 49-year coaching career at Mount Saint Mary's University. Phelan was a 1951 graduate of La Salle University and played one season for the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA. He was famous for wearing a bow tie on the sidelines.

In the NEC tournament, they defeated Sacred Heart, Robert Morris, and Saint Francis (PA) to win the tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As a No. 16 seed in the East region, they beat New Orleans in the First Four before losing in the first round to No. 1-seeded and ranked Villanova.

The 1959 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship Game was the final of the 1959 NCAA University Division basketball tournament and determined the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) national champion in men's basketball for the 1958–59 season. The game was held on March 21, 1959, at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. The California Golden Bears defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers, 71–70, to win the school's only national title in men's basketball.
