Murfy's fLaw is a Kenyan alternative rock band formed in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2007.

History

It is a 6-piece band that is unique in Kenya in its chosen genre of performed music. [1]

Murfy's fLaw is also unique in its Multi-cultural mix of peoples from different tribes and countries. [2] The band's musical style is experimental alternative rock which fuses alt-rock sounds with elements from Kiswahili folk and Hindi music.

On November 21, 2008, Murfy's fLaW released their début album "Makosa". [3] [4] [5] The album has an underlying feminist context with the band made up predominantly of female musicians performing in a genre typically dominated by men. The word ‘Makosa’ is Kiswahili for “the evil that men do”. [6]

On November 11, 2011, they released their second album, "Hello Light". [7]

On September 19,2019, Murfy's fLaW released their third album, "̶N̶a̶t̶a̶k̶a̶ Sitaki". [8]

The band frequently performs every first Friday at an Ethiopian restaurant called Dass. [9] They also have been known to have various random shows in Nairobi city. [10] [11] [12]

Makosa

Murfy's fLaw released their album, Makosa on 21 October 2008. The band explored various media to produce their music videos such as 2D animation for "Your Friend". [13]

Awards and nominations

Murfy’s fLaW received three nominations for the inaugural Heavy and the Beast Awards [15] in 2019, and won one.   Singer, Reema Doshi, was nominated for Best Female Artist, and their song, “Abso-bloomin-lutely” was nominated for Best Music Video. The band won an award in the Best Live Performance category.

Shlock Rock is an American-Israeli Jewish rock band put together in December 1985 and officially founded in 1986, led by singer Lenny Solomon. The band parodies popular secular songs, substituting Jewish religious-themed lyrics. To date they have released 39 albums. Shlock Rock continues to record albums and perform live as of 2015, and to date has sold more than 200,000 CD's, tapes and DVDs in the contemporary Jewish rock arena. Their music is a mix of pop-rock song parodies and original rock songs in English and Hebrew. The stated purpose of the band is to spread Jewish pride, identity and awareness throughout the Jewish community, for Jewish continuity. Jabali Afrika is a band formed in Nairobi, Kenya by former members of the Kenyan National Theatre. The band was founded by brothers Justo and Joseck Asikoye, and Victor Elolo, Evan Jumba, and Robert Owino, Peter Mbole, Stephen Wafula, Bernard kapima joining the band later. The band is known for its fusion of rock, reggae, and African percussion. Jabali Afrika got nominated with all one tribe collection for the 2022 Grammy awards for best children’s music category.

Odi pop is a Kenyan music style which involves localized hip hop and draws influences from reggae and Dancehall music to build on an African Rhythm base performed in sing-along rap in heavy Kiswahili/Sheng language. There are several sub-genres stemming from this umbrella term including Gengeton, Dabonge, Debe and others. The music is spearheaded by Kenyan youths and most of them are pursuing their careers as music groups opposed to solo careers.
