Muscle & Fitness is a British fitness magazine, which contains articles on strength and fitness training, diet plans and strategies for men and women, and tips and advice.

History

In 1940, health and fitness pioneer Joe Weider created a newsletter called ‘Your Physique’, which evolved into Muscle & Fitness, Weider Publications' very first magazine – and its flagship brand. Today, Muscle & Fitness is printed in 16 local editions in more than 22 countries, reaching a worldwide audience of over 7 million readers.[ citation needed ]

It contains a varied mix of features and information on training, nutrition, sports medicine, fashion and technology. Each month its staff answer readers questions and personal training techniques are demonstrated by fitness professionals.

Bodybuilding is the use of progressive resistance exercise to control and develop one's musculature for aesthetic purposes. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. In competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders appear in lineups and perform specified poses for a panel of judges who rank the competitors based on criteria such as symmetry, muscularity, size, conditioning, posing, and stage presentation. Mr. Olympia is the title awarded to the winner of the professional men's bodybuilding contest at Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend—an international bodybuilding competition that is held annually by the International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness (IFBB). Joe Weider created the contest to enable the Mr. Universe winners to continue competing and to earn money. The first Mr. Olympia was held on September 18, 1965, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York City, with Larry Scott winning his first of two straight titles.

Shape is a monthly English language fitness magazine started by Weider Publications in 1981, founded by Christine MacIntyre and became the number one women's fitness magazine. At that time, Weider Enterprises consisted primarily of the bodybuilding magazine Muscle & Fitness. Joe Weider and Christine MacIntyre had differing views of how to present Shape, Weider endorsing a less journalistic and more commercial approach to articles, MacIntyre endorsing a more academic, doctor-based magazine. Weider also endorsed a sexier approach to editorial while MacIntyre endorsed a healthier look for women, eschewing sexiness in the models and the copy. MacIntyre largely won that battle, editing a magazine that required that every byline have an advanced medical degree, that cover models should look healthy rather than sexy, and that sexist language be avoided. Christine MacIntyre was the editor-in-chief until her death in 1988. Tara Kraft is the current editor-in-chief. Shape found a readership based on that formula.

Jem was a magazine founded by Joe Weider in the 1950s as entertainment for heterosexual men. First Issue is November 1956 with Candy Barr on the cover. The monthly periodical was encouraged by American News distributors which asked Weider to start a competitor publication to rival the success Hugh Hefner had achieved with Playboy Magazine. Jem published photos of topless models and featured articles about dining, nightlife, and wine. Its companion magazine was Monsieur. Jem was quickly successful although Weider says that he was never very interested in its viability.

Michael Yessis is a teacher, sports performance trainer, biomechanist, and author. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He has done work translating, adapting, and implementing sports training methodology from the former Soviet Union, including work by Yuri Verkhoshansky, Anatoliy Bondarchuk, and Vladimir Issurin, for over fifty years.
