The M7 cars are a series of bilevel rail cars of the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB). Developed from the M6 cars they are built by Bombardier Transportation and Alstom. The first car was delivered in September 2018. The M7 coaches are mainly intended as intercity stock, they will completely replace the M4 and partly replace the M5. Different types of M7 cars can be coupled to form loco-hauled or self-propelled trains similar to the German Twindexx Vario.
At 18 December 2015 the SNCB, Bombardier and Alstom concluded a contract to deliver up to 1362 bilevel rail cars of a new design. At the same time 445 cars were ordered obligatorily. [1] [2] The 65 motorized cars of this order are manufactured in Valenciennes by Alstom. Bombardier produces all the other cars in Bruges. The M7 cars shall be used in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. [1]
The orders were expanded by 204 cars in 2020 and by 98 cars in 2021. [3]
Six different types of the M7 car are produced:
The concept of the M7 cars contains either trains formed of several middle cars and one or two Bmx motorized railcars or push–pull trains with conventional locomotives. These trains shall be capable to use the older M6 rolling stock.
The M7 cars feature air conditioning and a closed toilet system. Information screens are placed next to the interior doors showing travel information. Compared to the M6 coaches more comfortable seats, information screens, higher ceilings, more legroom with opposite seats, space for large luggage and more power sockets. Initially, a WiFi connection as an option but this was later deemed too expensive. The first class is on the top floor of some carriages. M7 coaches can be easily coupled with M6 coaches and will also be able to run in the Netherlands and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, as well as on the Belgian high-speed lines.
The trains have a boarding height of 0.63 m, while the most common platform heights in Belgium are 0.55 m and 0.76 m. This makes it difficult for people with reduced mobility to get in and out on a self-employed basis. This also makes it more difficult to get in and out with luggage because of the difference in height between the train and the platform. An additional order in December 2020 included 130 autonomously accessible carriages with an entry height of 76 cm for people with reduced mobility. A year later, in December 2021, another 98 carriages were ordered
All cars are adapted to the Belgian standard Railway platform height of 760 mm. [5]
The very first deployment of the M7 coaches took place on January 13, 2020 to February 26, 2020, when some M7 coaches rode on the P train 7401 and 8400 from Liège-Guillemins to Brussels-South. In the meantime, these trains are running again entirely with M4 carriages. M7 carriages are used in P trains between Visé and Brussels-South along with I11 carriages. Since January 2021, the M7 carriages have been used on all trains of the IC-01 connection between Ostend and Eupen. On August 23, 2021, the first homogeneous line of M7 carriages from Schaerbeek in the direction of Gent-Sint-Pieters ran insured as peak hour train 8014 and that in both directions.
From the 2021-2024 period, this train will replace the outdated M4 trains of the NMBS.
A railcar is a self-propelled railway vehicle designed to transport passengers. The term "railcar" is usually used in reference to a train consisting of a single coach, with a driver's cab at one or both ends. Some railway companies, such as the Great Western, termed such vehicles "railmotors".

One of two parts of the larger Bucharest public transport network, Metrorex has an average of approximately 720,000 passenger trips per weekday, compared to the 1,180,000 daily riders on Bucharest's STB transit system. In total, the Metrorex system is 80.1 kilometres (49.8 mi) long and has 64 stations.
A bilevel car or double-decker coach is a type of rail car that has two levels of passenger accommodation as opposed to one, increasing passenger capacity.
The Superliner is a type of bilevel intercity railroad passenger car used by Amtrak, the national rail passenger carrier in the United States. Amtrak commissioned the cars to replace older single-level cars on its long-distance trains in the Western United States. The design was based on the Budd Hi-Level cars used by the Santa Fe Railway on its El Capitan trains. Pullman-Standard built 284 cars, known as Superliner I, from 1975 to 1981; Bombardier Transportation built 195, known as Superliner II, from 1991 to 1996. The Superliner I cars were the last passenger cars built by Pullman.
The British Rail Class 220 Voyager is a class of diesel-electric high-speed multiple unit passenger trains built in Belgium by Bombardier Transportation in 2000 and 2001. They were introduced in 2001 to replace the 20-year-old InterCity 125 and almost 40-year-old Class 47-hauled Mark 2 fleets operating on the Cross Country Route. They were initially operated by Virgin CrossCountry and since 2007 have been operated by CrossCountry.

It was one of the world's largest companies in the rail vehicle and equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. Bombardier Transportation had many regional offices, production and development facilities worldwide. It produced a wide range of products including passenger rail vehicles, locomotives, bogies, propulsion and controls. In February 2020, the company had 36,000 employees, and 63 manufacturing and engineering locations around the world. Formerly a division of Bombardier Inc., the company was acquired by French manufacturer Alstom on 29 January 2021.
The DSB Class MF is a Danish-built high-comfort medium/long distance diesel multiple-unit train. The sets were built by ABB Scandia in Randers. This train model has been operating in Denmark and Sweden since 1990 and was previously operated in Israel from 1992–2024. The name IC3 indicates simply that it is a three-carriage InterCity trainset.
The 3-inch gun M1918 was a United States 3-inch anti-aircraft gun that entered service in 1918 and served until it was largely superseded by the 3-inch anti-aircraft gun M3 in 1930, though the M1918 remained with some National Guard units until early in World War II. The M3 was subsequently replaced by the M1 90mm AA gun early in World War II, primarily during 1942. The M3 3" gun was later adapted for the anti-tank role, serving as the main armament of the M10 tank destroyer during World War II.
The Double-deck Coach is a bilevel passenger railcar currently manufactured by Alstom, which acquired Bombardier Transportation in 2021 used by various European railways and Israel Railways. The current generation of double-deck coaches can be run at speeds up to 200 km/h (125 mph). Depending on their configuration, each coach can seat 100 to 150 passengers.
A control car, cab car, control trailer, or driving trailer is a non-powered rail vehicle from which a train can be operated. As dedicated vehicles or regular passenger cars, they have one or two driver compartments with all the controls and gauges required to remotely operate the locomotive, including exterior locomotive equipment such as horns, bells, ploughs, and lights. They also have communications and safety systems such as GSM-R or European Train Control System (ETCS). Control cars enable push-pull operation when located on the end of a train opposite its locomotive by allowing the train to reverse direction at a terminus without moving the locomotive or turning the train around.
The Xplorer is a class of diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains built by ABB. Initially entering service in October 1993 with CountryLink, the Xplorers are mechanically identical to the Endeavour railcars, though feature a higher level of passenger amenity. All 23 carriages were built in the Dandenong rolling stock factory. The Xplorers currently operate under NSW TrainLink, running on the regional Main North, Main Western and Main Southern lines throughout New South Wales.
Class 27 were the first of the Belgian Railways' large 1980s family of 144 electric locomotives. The family was made up of Classes 11 (12), 12 (12), 21 (60) and 27 (60). Classes 11, 12 and 21 were nearly twice as powerful as the preceding classes 22, 23 and 25. Class 27 was more than twice as powerful as these 1950s locomotives. The family was heavily influenced by the Class 202 locomotives built in the mid 1970s. They are very reliable because of the trial and error development of their predecessors. This family came into service with M4 and M5 coaching stock and the AM 80 and AM 86 series of EMUs. This generation was a major modernisation even if the older M2 coaching stock remained active for more than a decade. These four sister classes are visually identical except for a few minor details. Class 11's livery was specific to the Benelux service, which they operated for most of their service lives.
The Class 13 are a type of mixed use 200 km/h (124 mph) multivoltage electric locomotive of type Traxis designed by Alstom in the late 1990s for the Belgian and Luxembourgish railways.
The Alstom Coradia is a family of diesel multiple units, electric multiple units, and unpowered rail cars for intercity and regional service manufactured by Alstom, with variants operating in Europe, North America, and Africa.
The Société Franco-Belge was a Franco-Belgian engineering firm that specialised in the construction of railway vehicles and their components and accessories. The company originated in 1859 as the Belgian firm Compagnie Belge pour la Construction de Machines et de Matériels de Chemins de Fer, founded by Charles Evrard. The company expanded its share capital in 1881 forming a new firm Société Anonyme Franco-Belge pour la Construction de Machines et de Matériel de Chemins de Fer and constructed a factory in Raismes (Valenciennes) in the Département Nord in France.
The I11 is a type of passenger car used since 1995 in the network of the Belgian railway company NMBS/SNCB for long distance (InterCity) trains.
Zefiro is a family of high-speed passenger trains designed by Bombardier Transportation whose variants have top operating speeds of between 250 km/h (155 mph); 380 km/h (240 mph) and 400 km/h (250 mph).
The MultiLevel Coach is a bi-level passenger rail car for use on commuter rail lines. Originally built by Bombardier Transportation beginning in 2006, they are now built by Alstom since 2021, who markets the coaches as part of their Adessia Coach series.
High-floor describes the interior flooring of commuter vehicles primarily used in public transport such as trains, light rail cars and other rail vehicles, along with buses and trolleybuses. Interior floor height is generally measured above the street surface or above the top of the rail. High-floor designs usually result from packaging requirements: mechanical items such as axles, motors, crankshafts, and/or transmissions, or luggage storage spaces are traditionally placed under the interior floor of these vehicles. The term is used in contrast with low-floor designs, which offer a decreased floor and entry height above the street surface. Since low-floor designs generally were developed after high-floor vehicles, the older high-floor design is sometimes also known as conventional or the “traditional” design.
The Intercity Nieuwe Generatie, or ICNG is an electric multiple unit trainset of the Dutch Railways. In addition to supplementing the existing intercity rolling stock, it will replace the Bombardier TRAXX locomotives and Intercityrijtuig coaches on the high-speed line between Amsterdam and Belgium. This will provide the connection that was originally planned to be provided by the Fyra service, which was cancelled in 2013.
