History
Construction of what was then called “Naval Communications Station Spain” began on 19 December 1961 on the Spanish Naval base in Rota, Spain. The communications station became fully operational on 31 May 1963 and was subject to several reorganizations and name changes over the years to include:
7 October 1991 - Name changed to “Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Spain (NCTS Spain)” to reflect the increased use of computers and telecommunications to carry out its mission.
1 October 1993 – Organization was downgraded from a Command to a Detachment, reporting directly to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Mediterranean (NCTAMS MED) in Naples, Italy as a result of region-wide U.S. military reorganizations following the end of the Cold War. This also resulted in a name change to “Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Mediterranean, Detachment Rota, Spain (NCTAMS MED Det Rota)”.
1 October 1997 - Changed name to “Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Europe and Central, Detachment Rota, Spain (NCTAMS EURCENT Det Rota)” to reflect the broader area of responsibility for the regional command in Naples that then included Europe and Southwest Asia (aka Central).
1 December 2004 – Navy-wide reorganization of communications stations resulted in NCTAMS EURCENT in Naples being downgraded to an O-5 command with regional responsibility and authority for Europe and Southwest Asia shifting to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT or NCTL) in Norfolk, VA. Subsequently, the communications station in Rota renamed to “Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic, Detachment Rota, Spain (NCTAMS LANT Det Rota or NCTL Det Rota)”.
1 October 2015 – Operational Control (OPCON) of NCTL Det Rota was shifted from NCTL HQ in Norfolk, VA to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples, Italy (NCTS Naples), which was once again an O-6 Command. Administrative Control (ADCON) remained with NCTL HQ.
14 July 2022 – Capt. Teague J. Suarez relieved Capt. David S. Baird as commander, U.S. Naval Activities Spain and commanding officer of Naval Station Rota during a change of command ceremony in front of the installations headquarters.

Naval Station Norfolk is a United States Navy base in Norfolk, Virginia, that is the headquarters and home port of the U.S. Navy's Fleet Forces Command. The installation occupies about 4 miles (6.4 km) of waterfront space and 11 miles (18 km) of pier and wharf space of the Hampton Roads peninsula known as Sewell's Point. It is the world's largest naval station, with the largest concentration of U.S. Navy forces through 75 ships alongside 14 piers and with 134 aircraft and 11 aircraft hangars at the adjacently operated Chambers Field. Port Services controls more than 3,100 ships' movements annually as they arrive and depart their berths.
The Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Pacific is a United States Navy facility in Wahiawa, Hawaii that provides operational direction and management to all Pacific Naval Telecommunication System users.
The Naval Network Warfare Command (NAVNETWARCOM) is the United States Navy's information operations, intelligence, networks, and space unit. Naval Network Warfare Command's mission is to execute, under Commander TENTH Fleet Operational Control, tactical-level command and control of Navy Networks and to leverage Joint Space Capabilities for Navy and Joint Operations.
The Commander, Naval Surface Force, Atlantic (COMNAVSURFLANT) is the Surface Force Type Commander (TYCOM) under the United States Fleet Forces Command. As Naval Surface Force Atlantic, it is a military formation, and the organization is often known as SURFLANT. Its headquarters are at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia. The current commander is Rear Admiral Joseph F. Cahill III. COMNAVSURFLANT supervises all surface ships based on the Eastern United States and Gulf Coast of the United States, as well as ships forward deployed to Naval Station Rota, Spain.
The Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Naples provides voice, video and data services to the U.S. Navy joint, allied and coalition customers. It has two manned sites: C4I at Capodichino and SATCOM at Lago Patria. NCTS Naples has approximately 20 Officers, 325 Enlisted personnel, and 40 civilians.
The U.S. Tenth Fleet is a functional formation and a numbered fleet in the United States Navy. It was first created as an anti-submarine warfare coordinating organization during the Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War. It was reactivated as a force provider for Fleet Cyber Command on 29 January 2010. U.S. Tenth Fleet serves as the numbered fleet for U.S. Fleet Cyber Command and exercises operational control of assigned naval forces to coordinate with other naval, coalition and Joint Task Forces to execute the full spectrum of cyber, electronic warfare, information operations, and signal intelligence capabilities and missions across the cyber, electromagnetic, and space domains.
The Marine Corps Security Force Regiment is a dedicated expeditionary security and anti-terrorism regiment of the United States Marine Corps. Its mission is to provide security forces to guard high-value naval installations, most notably those containing nuclear vessels and weapons. Additionally, it also provides the Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Teams (FAST) and Recapture Tactics Teams (RTT). Marines who complete Security Forces training are assigned a secondary Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 8152, while instructors can earn 8153.
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1, is a United States Navy Seabee battalion. NMCB ONE, the original "Pioneers", has a long, proud and distinguished history as the very first Naval Construction Battalion of the service that would become known as the Seabees.
The Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic is the aviation Type Commander (TYCOM) for the United States Naval aviation units operating primarily in the Atlantic under United States Fleet Forces Command. Type Commanders are in administrative control (ADCON), and in some cases operational control (OPCON) of certain types of assets assigned to the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets. AIRLANT is responsible for the material readiness, administration, training, and inspection of units/squadrons under their command, and for providing operationally ready air squadrons and aircraft carriers to the fleet.
Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Grindavik is a transmission facility of the US Navy at Grindavík, Iceland, maintained by the N62 Division. It is active on shortwave and longwave under the callsign TFK on 37.5 kHz.
The Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Far East is a Navy military unit headquartered in Yokosuka, Japan. The unit consists of nine geographically-dispersed sites in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Diego Garcia. NCTS Far East's mission is to "operate and defend mission critical, Navy warfighting networks and communications systems necessary for U.S. Naval, Joint, and Coalition Commanders to conduct secure command and control in the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) theater of operations."
Naval Support Activity Naples is a United States Navy military complex, located adjacent to Naples International Airport in Capodichino, Naples, Italy.
VP-66 was a patrol squadron of the U.S. Navy Reserve. The squadron was established on 1 November 1970 at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, where it was based for the rest of its life. It was disestablished on 31 March 2006, after 25 years of service. The squadron's nicknames were the Flying Sixes from 1971 to 1974, the Dicemen from 1975 to 1980, and the Liberty Bells from 1981 onward. Elements of the squadron made 19 major overseas deployments.
VP-68 was a Patrol Squadron of the U.S. Navy Reserve. The squadron was established on 1 November 1970 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Its home port moved to Naval Air Facility Washington in 1985. The squadron was disestablished on 16 January 1997, after 26 years of service. Its nickname was the Blackhawks from 1972 onward. Elements of the squadron made 28 major overseas deployments.
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion TWO SIX was a United States Navy Seabee battalion commissioned in 1942 for support to Naval Operations in the Pacific Theater in World War II and later a Reserve Naval Construction Battalion based in various locations in the Midwest from 1962 until 2014.
Naval Radio Transmitter Facility LaMoure is a United States Navy installation located about 3 km west of LaMoure, North Dakota. The site uses a former OMEGA Navigation System station as a VLF transmitter for communications with the US submarine fleet. Commander Blake Wayne Van Leer lead the construction and opening of the site.
Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Guam is a United States Navy communications facility on the U.S. territory of Guam. It is located on the Naval Base Guam North Finegayan Telecommunications Site along Guam Highway 3 in Dededo, on the northwest coast of the island.
The 10th Space Operations Squadron is the United States Space Force unit responsible for operating the Mobile User Objective System and Ultra-High Frequency Follow-On satellite constellations, providing global communications to the United States Armed Forces.
