Neera Yadav is a former officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) who was convicted of fraud. She is originally from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, India, [1]

Early life

Yadav studied at Welham Girls' School, Dehradun. She was part of the 1971 batch of IAS service graduates. She is married to Mahendra Singh Yadav, an officer of the Indian Police Service who later resigned from the service to pursue his political career. [2]

Career

She was posted to different positions in the bureaucracy in Uttar Pradesh. She became well-known as district magistrate of Jaunpur district during the flood crisis for her daring rescue operations. [3] Later she was selected among the top three most corrupt IAS officers of Uttar Pradesh in a vote of her colleagues. [4] [5] She was appointed the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, later resigning the position after a decision by the Supreme Court of India, thus becoming the second IAS officer in succession after Akhand Pratap Singh to have done so. After retirement, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2009 but resigned after media questions over the decision. [8] [9] [10]

Crime

In December 2010 Yadav was sentenced to four years' rigorous imprisonment after being convicted of misusing her official position as IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh to allot land fraudulently in Noida to Flex Industries, owned by industrialist Ashok Chaturvedi. [11] [12] [13]

On 20 November 2012 a special CBI court sentenced Neera Yadav to 3 years' imprisonment for the Noida plot scam that happened between 1993-1995. [14] [15] At that time she was serving as the Noida Authority CEO. [14] She fraudulently allotted one plot for herself, one for her husband and one each for her two daughters [a total of 4 plots for her and her family], [14] knowing that the rules allowed only one plot of land to one family. [16]

On 2 August 2017 the Supreme Court of India sentenced Neera Yadav to two years' imprisonment in the Noida land allotment scam. [1]

On the contrary, the rise in her personal wealth and that of her party have been criticised as indicative of corruption.

The Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly election followed as a result the expiration of the five-year term of the previous legislature elected in Uttar Pradesh, India. The election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was held in seven phases from 8 February through 3 March 2012. Uttar Pradesh has the world's largest population for a sub-national democracy. The incumbent chief minister Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party, which previously won an absolute majority of seats, was defeated by Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, which gained an absolute majority in the election. Mulayam's son and Samajwadi party president Akhilesh Yadav was nominated as chief minister by the party.

The Uttar Pradesh illegal sand mining scam is a political scandal relating to events that occurred in 2012–2017 during the Samajwadi Party (SP) rule. It is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the 2016 orders of Allahabad High Court for allowing illegal mining in 7 districts of Uttar Pradesh – Shamli, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Siddharthnagar, Deoria, Kaushambi and Saharanpur – in violation of rules and ban by the National Green Tribunal. On 5 January 2019, the CBI raided 14 suspects in 14 locations in 7 cities across Uttar Pradesh and Delhi pertaining to this scam, and incriminating evidence was seized.

Bhukhya Chandarakala Niru, also known as B. Chandrakala, is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of 2008 batch in Uttar Pradesh. She is known for taking action against her subordinates, mostly due to her widely circulated videos in which she went on surprise inspections, pulling up civic officials over lack of quality in building material or poor sanitation.
