Nicole Vogel is an American magazine publisher and author. She is the cofounder and publisher of Portland Monthly , a regional magazine covering Portland, Oregon. She received the 2007 Oregon Entrepreneurs Network Entrepreneurship Award for Individual Achievement, [1] the second woman to receive the honor. [2]

<i>Portland Monthly</i>

Portland Monthly is a monthly news and general interest magazine which covers food, politics, business, design, events and culture in Portland, Oregon. The magazine was co-founded in 2003 by siblings Nicole and Scott Vogel. Nicole had previously worked for Cendant Corporation and Time Warner, and Scott had been a journalist at The New York Times. Though the magazine had some trouble with funding in its first year, it grew to a stable circulation of 56,000 and by 2006 was the seventh-largest city magazine in the United States.

Career

Vogel started her publishing career with a job at Leaders Magazine in New York. [1] In 2002, she got a job at Turner Broadcasting, and within three years was the vice president of strategy. [1] Vogel's work for Turner focused specifically on business development for CNN's interactive properties. [3]

CNN American news channel

Cable News Network (CNN) is an American news-based pay television channel owned by WarnerMedia News & Sports, a division of AT&T's WarnerMedia. CNN was founded in 1980 by American media proprietor Ted Turner as a 24-hour cable news channel. Upon its launch, CNN was the first television channel to provide 24-hour news coverage, and was the first all-news television channel in the United States.

In 2001, she and her brother Scott Vogel moved to Portland, Oregon, to be close to their sister Lori, whose husband had been killed in a car accident. [1] While there, they realized the city did not have a regional magazine despite being a large market, so she set out to raise funds to start the magazine. She faced difficulties both for being a woman entrepreneur in a male-dominated industry [2] as well as to start a print publication when circulation for print magazines was declining. [4]

Portland Monthly launched in 2003 along with its parent company Sagacity Media, also co-owned by Nicole Vogel and Scott Vogel, and was profitable by its second issue. [3] In March 2006, she launched Seattle, Washington local magazine Seattle Metropolitan , also under the Sagacity Media parent company. [1] In 2013, she and her brother started Houstonia , the city magazine for Houston, Texas. [5] Sagacity Media also owns titles in Colorado and Utah. [6]

Seattle Metropolitan, or Seattle Met, is a monthly city magazine covering Seattle, Washington. Its first issue was published in March 2006, and features reporting and feature articles on Seattle events, politics, people, dining and restaurants, popular places, and attractions.

Houstonia is a magazine about Houston and Greater Houston, Texas, United States. It is published by SagaCity Media. The magazine's first issue released in April 2013, titled 250 Reasons to Love Houston. As of January 2016, the magazine is distributed at 800 locations in Greater Houston, including newsstands, retail outlets, and grocery stores.

The Hillsboro Tribune is a weekly newspaper published on Wednesdays that covers the city of Hillsboro in the U.S. state of Oregon. Owned by the Pamplin Media Group, the newspaper published its first issue on September 7, 2012. It was Pamplin's first new paper since 2001, when the company started the Portland Tribune, and was designed to complement its other local papers in the Portland metropolitan area. The Tribune competed with the now defunct Hillsboro Argus, which is owned by Advance Publications, and which also publishes The Oregonian that competes with the Portland Tribune. Esparzas

Esparza's Tex Mex Cafe, or simply Esparza's, was a Tex-Mex restaurant in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. Opened by Martha and Joe Esparza in 1990, the restaurant operated for more than 24 years before closing in January 2014. Its unusual menu included buffalo tostadas, ground ostrich and nopalitos, several varieties of tongue, beef brisket, and more traditional options such as enchiladas, quesadillas, tacos and tamales. Esparza's was one of Portland's most popular restaurants during the 1990s and was named "Restaurant of the Year" by The Oregonian in 1992.

Old Town Pizza

Old Town Pizza is a pizzeria established in 1974 and located in the historic Merchant Hotel building in the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood of central Portland, Oregon in the United States. The company has a satellite location located at Vanport Square in Northeast Portland that includes a brewery branded as Old Town Brewing Co. Two days before its March 2012 opening, a fire forced the restaurant to undergo reconstruction for six weeks.
