The Owls Athletics Club Leicester is one of four leading athletics clubs in Leicestershire, UK. It has gained many regional and national accolades with some individual athletes representing England and Great Britain at junior and senior level. The club is also known for developing its junior athletes and its distinctive vests (bearing black and white stripes).
The club began as 'Oadby and Wigston Legionnaires' (acronym OWLS) at the Royal British Legion in Wigston in 1981. As it expanded, two sections formed to cater for differing competitive aspirations. A social running club at the original base in Wigston; and a multi-disciplinary athletics club for junior and senior athletes based at Saffron Lane sports centre in Leicester. The two sections made a complete split in 2008 when the Wigston-based section became "Wigston Phoenix" Running Club, and the Leicester-based section adopting the name Owls AC Leicester.
Originally, the club was founded by a trio of Mick Strange, Phil Starmer Geoff Matthews with the aim to compete against other Leicestershire-based clubs. At a later date, Wayne Walker was recruited as coach for a newly formed junior section and led them to many outstanding successes. After over 25 years service to the club he remains the head coach. After a long initial journey the club began to enjoy its first successes under Wayne's tutelage; with subsequent teams and individuals winning many regional and national competitions ranging from track and field to fell running and cross country.
The club provides year-round competition for its members in many local, regional and national running and athletics events. These include:

- North Midlands X-Country League
- County Championships (athletics, cross-country)
- Midlands Counties Championships (athletics, cross-country, relays)
- English National Championships (cross-country, relays)
The club encourages members to participate for the team in club events but also in other events as an individual to enable athletes to develop. The club often organises trips to races abroad including events in Belgium and Spain to enable athletes to experience overseas competition and as social/cultural opportunities.
The main night for club training at Beauchamp College Oadby on Wednesdays for junior and senior athletes of all levels and abilities. Further club training sessions occur on Saturday mornings at Knighton Park and the Leicester Cycle Circuit at New College on a Tuesday evening. The club traditionally meets at Bradgate Park (Newtown Linford Car Park, 10am) on a Sunday morning for a run around some of the nicest parkland and trails in the UK.

Leicestershire is a ceremonial county in the East Midlands of England. It is bordered by Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire to the north, Rutland to the east, Northamptonshire to the south-east, Warwickshire to the south-west, and Staffordshire to the west. Oadby had a population of 23,849 in 2011, and like its neighbour Wigston is made up of five wards. The Borough of Oadby and Wigston is twinned with Maromme in France, and Norderstedt in Germany.
The United Counties League is an English football league covering an area including the English counties of northern Bedfordshire, northern Buckinghamshire, most of Cambridgeshire, southern Derbyshire, southern Leicestershire, most of Lincolnshire, western Norfolk, Northamptonshire, southern Nottinghamshire, northern Oxfordshire, Rutland, eastern Staffordshire, eastern Warwickshire and eastern West Midlands. It has a total of five divisions, three for first teams and two for reserve teams, but the reserves' divisions were merged into a single division for the 2013–14 season and remains so at present.

Birstall United Football Club is a football club based in Birstall, near Leicester, in Leicestershire, England. The club are currently members of the United Counties League Division One.
Leicester Lions are a rugby union club which currently play in the third tier of the English rugby union system, National League 1, following their promotion from National League 2 West in 2023. The Lions are a leading amateur club in Leicester and along with Loughborough University and Hinckley are the senior clubs in Leicestershire after Premiership Rugby side Leicester Tigers. The club was formed as a result of an amalgamation between two local clubs in 1998, these being Westleigh RFC and Wigston RFC.
The European Cross Country Championships is an annual international cross country running competition. Organised by the European Athletic Association, it is the area championships for the region and is held in December each year. The championships was inaugurated in 1994 in Alnwick and the venue for the championships changes each year.

Birstall Rugby Football Club is a men's senior rugby union club based in Birstall, Leicestershire. The club currently plays in the RFU Midlands leagues, currently participating in Midlands Counties 1 East (North) following promotion from Midlands 3 East (North) at the end of the 2021-22 season. Birstall won the RFU Junior Vase (midlands) competition in 2020 with the final being the last game before rugby was halted for the Covid-19 pandemic.
South Leicester Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union club based in Wigston, Leicestershire - just south of Leicester. The club runs two senior sides, plus a colts side and a full set of junior teams. The first XV were playing in the Midlands Premier, the fifth tier of the English rugby union system, following their relegation from National League 2 North at the end of the 2018–19 season, however, due to a run of bad results and a number of players leaving the club, they have withdrawn from the Midlands Premier.
The European Champion Clubs Cup Cross Country is an annual cross country running competition between the European running clubs that are the reigning national champions for their country. It is often abbreviated to the name ECCC Cross Country. It is traditionally held on the first Sunday of February.
The English National Cross Country Championships is an annual English cross country running event which takes place in late February following the regional championships which all take place on the same weekend usually in late January. The event is the oldest national cross country championship in the world, having been first run in 1876. The English, Welsh and Scottish National Cross Country Championships are all usually held on the same day.
The Leicestershire Rugby Union (LRU) is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland in England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for those counties. The LRU administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in those two counties and administers the Leicestershire county rugby representative teams.
The Leicestershire County Cup is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Leicestershire Rugby Union. It was first introduced in 1890 with the inaugural winners being South Wigston. The competition was known as the Leicestershire League Cup until 1893 when it was changed to Leicestershire Senior Cup. The first competition was open to the top sides in the county apart from the Leicester FC first XV, who were considered too strong and would instead enter an 'A' team up until 1906. Smaller clubs in the county, as well as senior club second sides, played in the Leicestershire Junior Cup which had its inaugural competition three seasons earlier in 1887.
Leicestershire 1 was a tier 10 English Rugby Union league with teams from Leicestershire taking part. Promoted teams moved up to East Midlands/Leicestershire 1 and relegated teams dropped to Leicestershire 2. The league ran for two spells between 1987–1992 and 1996–1998 before it was permanently cancelled and the majority of teams transferred into either East Midlands/Leicestershire 1 or East Midlands/Leicestershire 2.
