Zhytomyr is a city in the north of the western half of Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Zhytomyr Oblast (province), as well as the administrative center of the surrounding Zhytomyr Raion (district). The city of Zhytomyr is not a part of Zhytomyr Raion: the city itself is designated as its own separate raion within the oblast; moreover Zhytomyr consists of two so-called "raions in a city": Bohunskyi Raion and Koroliovskyi Raion. Zhytomyr occupies an area of 65 square kilometres. Its population is 263,507

The 61st Jager Infantry Brigade is one of the youngest formations of the Mechanized Infantry of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, raised in 2015 as the 61st Motorized Infantry Brigade of the UGF's 4th Army Reserve Corps. Based in Zhytomyr Oblast, it is one of the Ground Forces' specialized formations, which help the Armed Forces of Ukraine defend the forest lands of the north as well as in the swampy terrain of the Pinsk Marshes, which are in the AOR of the brigade.
The 2022 Zhytomyr attacks are attacks on the civilian airport of Zhytomyr that took place on 27 February 2022 as part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, with attacks on the city itself following in March. The airport is situated around 150 kilometres (93 mi) from the capital city of Ukraine, Kyiv, near the town of Zhytomyr, Zhytomyr Oblast. It was reported that the Russian armed forces used 9K720 Iskander missile systems located in Belarus.
