PDK is an all-male trio band from Namibia. They started off as dancers and were known as The Action Boys. Later they changed their name to Action Geez. Now they perform under the name of PDK which represents the initial of their first name. The group has performed in the Namibian Annual Music Awards. They have also performed in several other reputed award shows and events. Patrick is the lead singer of the group while Dion has a unique style. Kamtonyo is a median combination of the two. The group is known to take inspiration for its music from reality.

History

Patrick, Dion and Kamtonyo are a Namibian Kwaito trio popularly known as PDK. The group was officially launched in 2006, under the Omalaeti Music label. The name PDK is made up from the first letter of the member's names Patrick, Dion and Kamtonyo. Patrick Mwashindange was born at Onanjaba village in Ohangwena region, in 1985. Dion Auala was born in Luanda, Angola, in 1986, and Christian "Kamtonyo" Andreas was born in 1987, in Oshakati. All the group members schooled at Oshakati Senior Secondary School and that is where they all got to know each other.

All the three members were popular Kwaito and Pantsula dancers in their hometown Oshakati before they became friends and started to write and sing songs as a group in 1998. The group has featured on local songs like: The Dogg's "Live Life" with Tate Buti, Ees' "U My Lady". [1]

Music career

Over the past decade, the group has released nine albums and performed in many events and award shows. The group performed at Namibia's 30th independence anniversary celebrations. [2]

The trio entered the music industry through their album Skoko. This gave them recognition and acceptance from their Namibian music fans. This album also helped them to achieve their first Namibian music award.

The group's sixth album Moko was released in December 2011. It received massive airplay on the local radio stations. The album has hit songs including "Dirty Kandeshi", "Moko" and "Bengusa". [3]

The Group's ninth and latest album KEKAKU was released in 2014 among much fanfare. The album features Oshiwambo lyrics and many of its tracks are considered to be club bangers. The album also features traditional songs with slower beats. There is also heavy and unique use of African drums. The album comprises 20 songs. [4]

The trio has been active in the Namibian entertainment scene and have collaborated with some of the country's biggest names in the music industry, these include Kwaito star and Channel O award winner The Dogg, kwaito star Ees and one of Namibia's highest selling artists Tate Buti, as well as a handful of local Namibian artists. They have also worked with Zambian artist Shyman and Maky2. They have also shared a stage with international artist such as Flavor, EVE, Oliver Mtukudzi, Freshly Ground and Ringo.

The band was also featured in DJ Siya's debut album. [5]

Awards

Their debut album Skoko, earned the group their first Namibian music award in the 'Best Duo-Group' category in the 2008 Sanlam-NBC music awards. In March 2012 the group withdrew from the controversial Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs). The organizers released the nominees' list and PDK was not on it, this made a lot of Namibian music lovers to complain because they thought the group deserved to be nominated. Days later, the award's organizers made a public announcement that PDK not being nominated was a mistake, but this led to the group withdrawing from the awards because it was not initially nominated. Martin Morocky, known by his stage name as The Dogg, is a Namibian musician. Considered a kwaito artist, his debut album, Shimaliw' Osatana, was released in 2004 to mixed reviews. The Dogg was part of the group Omalaeti O'Swapo, which released one album in 2004. His music is enjoyed internationally, in countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Dogg has performed in France, England and Canada. He has received awards and nominations from Channel O. He is one of the highest awarded artists in his country, as well as one of the highest selling. As of 2022, King Tee Dee has about 11 albums and over 20 awards to his name, and he is the most awarded musician in Namibia.

Mshasho Productions, also referred to as Mshasho Music Productions and Mshasho Records, is a Namibian Independent record label founded by Namibian musician and producer, Martin "The Dogg" Morocky in 2003. The company is a subsidiary of The Dogg's company Mshasho closed cooperation. The name Mshasho is derived from its original name Omushasho which is the Oshiwambo name for a shotgun. The label has shaped careers for artists such as Sunny Boy, OmPuff, Tre Van Die Kasie, TeQuila, Karlos Lokos, Chipolopolo, Richie and Kamasutra. The label has so far released ten albums, making it one of the leading record labels in the country.

Sunday Shipushu, known as Sunny Boy is a Namibian rapper from Ongwediva. He performs a brand of music known as hikwa, which he engineered by fusing hip hop and Kwaito. He rose to fame after collaborating with Gazza on his song "Koko" in 2004. He increased his buzz with his hit single "Balance" in 2005 when he signed with Mshasho Productions.

<i>Shimaliw Osatana</i> 2004 studio album by The Dogg

Shimaliw' Osatana is the debut album by Namibian kwaito master The Dogg, released in February 2004 through RC-Ghetto Records. Shimaliw' Osatana was the first full length kwaito album released in Namibia. The album was immediately hailed as a masterpiece by several critics, and is today one of the most celebrated and influential albums in Namibia. Shimaliw' Osatana, established The Dogg as one of the most profound lyricists in Namibia, introducing his signature rough attitude style.

<i>Take Out Yo Gun</i> 2004 studio album by The Dogg

Take Out Yo Gun is the second album by kwaito star The Dogg, released in December 2004. The album has received many positive reviews from critics despite the fact that it was released the same year as Shimaliw' Osatana. Take Out Yo Gun was the first album to be released on The Dogg's own label Mshasho Productions. Gazza appeared on the album, The Dogg also appeared on Gazza's Zula II Survive which marked the end of their collaboration.

<i>You Cant Ignore</i> 2007 studio album by The Dogg

You Can't Ignore is the fourth album by The Dogg that was released on 5 October 2007 by Mshasho and KOOL Productions. The album was to be titled Mshasho: You Can't Ignore and was later changed prior to its release date. The album features the first collaboration between The Dogg and his music mentor Elvo. It also features the first collaboration between The Dogg and Qonja. This album is more mature and very different from his previous albums. It features a dark tone similar to his first release, Shimaliw' Osatana. The entire album is self-produced with DJ Kboz co-producing two songs. As of 2008, the album is the highest and fastest selling kwaito album in Namibia.

<i>Elai Lineendunge</i> 2006 studio album by Sunny Boy

Elai Lineendunge is the second album by Namibian rapper Sunny Boy, and the first to be released on his own label GreenHouse Entertainment. It was released in December 2006. The album features a much darker sound and much deeper subject matter than, Young, Black en Gifted. It moved away from the mainstream original type of kwaito, used on Young, Black en Gifted and albums done by Gazza and The Dogg, to a hip hop type of kwaito that Sunny describe as hikwa. This style has become influential and has seen Gazza, Qonja, Chipolopolo, Exit & Mushe and many other new Namibian kwaito artist experimenting with it.

Tretius Kauhangengo, better known as Tre Van Die Kasie, most commonly referred to as Tre is a Namibian kwaito musician and rapper. Tre rose to fame after signing with Mshasho Productions in 2005. He is the half brother of fellow kwaito musician, Kavax.

Omalaeti O'Swapo was the only album released by the Namibian political kwaito group Omalaeti O'Swapo.

Zula II Survive is the second album by the Namibian kwaito artist Gazza. The album was more kwaito than his previous release, Tanauka, and until today is considered Gazza's best album. Zula II Survive together with The Dogg's Shimaliw' Osatana and Take Out Yo Gun are considered the first albums to have shaped the Namibian kwaito genre. The album also introduced Sunny Boy to the music industry. "Koko", "KKN" and "Zula II Zula" are the album's biggest hits.

Naftalie Shigwedha Amukwelele commonly known as D-Naff, is a Namibian multiple award-winning and top selling rapper /singer, actor and a former street gangster. D-Naff sings inspirational Gospel / religious music in the style of kwaito, hip hop, kizomba, dancehall and afro-pop. D-Naff is also a motivational and inspirational speaker and has visited more than 100 schools, Universities and colleges in Namibia including the Namibia University of Science and Technology formerly The Polytechnic of Namibia, Windhoek College of Education, Ongwediva College of Education and the University of Namibia.

The Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA) ceremony was the biggest awards ceremony in Namibia. It was established in 2011 by MTC Namibia and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). David Shikalepo, popularly known by his stage name as Exit, is a Namibian musician. He is considered as a kwaito artist. Moreover, he was awarded the best kwaito and male artist of the year at Namibians Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) awards in the year 2018.

Big Nuz was a South African Kwaito trio from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, founded in 2002. The group was composed of three members known by their stage names Mampintsha, R Mashesha, and Danger.

House Guru Gang is a Namibian kwaito and Afro house music group, whose original line-up consisted of Kahengutji "Chahelman" Richard, Sappy “Jowdy” Mathias and Baptista “Nasho” Gerson. Formed in 2014, the group originates from Rundu, Kavango East. Their name was inspired by a Swedish house music supergroup Swedish House Mafia.
