West Padang is a subdistrict (kecamatan) in the city of Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. In the administrative area of this district, West Sumatra, the governor's office and the hall town Padang is located.[ clarification needed ]
West Sumatra is a province of Indonesia. It lies on the west coast of the island of Sumatra. The latest official estimate for January 2014 shows a population of 5,098,790. West Sumatra is sub-divided into 12 regencies and seven cities. It has relatively more cities than other provinces in Indonesia, except Java province. Its capital is Padang. The province borders the provinces of North Sumatra to the north, Riau and Jambi to the east, and Bengkulu to the southeast. It includes the Mentawai Islands off the coast. West Sumatra is home to the Minangkabau people, although the traditional Minangkabau region is actually wider than the current administrative region of the province of West Sumatra, covering up to the southern region of North Sumatra, the western region of Riau, the western region of Jambi and the northern region of Bengkulu. In addition, The Minangkabau people have also spread to other parts of Indonesia, even to neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. Now about half of the Minangkabau people live outside of their traditional region, the majority of whom live in large cities in Indonesia and Malaysia. Many Malays in Malaysia are of Minangkabau descent, they mainly inhabit arounf the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor, as well as other parts of Malaysia.

The Padri War was fought from 1803 until 1837 in West Sumatra, Indonesia between the Padris and the Adats. "Padris" were Muslim clerics from Sumatra who, inspired by Wahabism and after returning from Hajj, wanted to impose Sharia in Minangkabau country in West Sumatra, Indonesia. "Adats" comprised the Minangkabau nobility and traditional chiefs. The latter asked for the help of the Dutch, who intervened from 1821 and helped the nobility defeat the Padri faction.

Sumatera Thawalib represented the modernist school of Islam in Indonesia, a strand of thought aimed at Islamic reform through heavy emphasis on the Qur'an and hadith, modern scientific education, and abolishing of non-orthodoxy, inspired by Islamic Modernism promoted by Muhammad Abduh. The term Sumatera Thawalib literally means "Students of Sumatra", and it was founded on January 15, 1919 as a result of meeting between the Muslim students of Padang Panjang and Parabek. The aim of the organization was deepening of Islamic knowledge among the Muslim students. The organization had contributed substantially to the development of Islam in West Sumatra in the early 20th century.
Abdullah Ahmad was an Islamic cleric (ulama) and reformist hailed from Padang Panjang, West Sumatra. He is a founder of Islamic mass organization based in West Sumatra, Sumatera Thawalib. He also founded the Islamic magazine Al-Munir, the first Islamic mass media in the Indonesian archipelago. Together with Abdul Karim Amrullah, he became one of the first Indonesians who received the honorable degree from Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
