Jalan Ampang became the backbone of the road system linking Ampang to Kuala Lumpur before being surpassed by the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) E12, in 2001.

It will link up Sungai Besi, Alam Damai, Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway and Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2. The 31.8 km (19.8 mi) expressway will be built to reduce traffic jams along the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 from Ampang to Bandar Tasik Selatan.
