Pasqual Scanu (Alghero 1908 - Sassari 1978) was an Italian educator and writer in Catalan and Italian.
He studied in Rome and was a school teacher and later a school director in the province of Sassari (1937–1975). He was very interested in Catalan culture in Alghero and took part in almost all Catalan Floral Games since 1959.

Marianus IV, called the Great, was the Judge (king) of Arborea, kingdom in the island of Sardinia, from 1347 to his death. He was, as his nickname indicates, the greatest sovereign of Arborea. He was a legislator and a warrior whose reign saw the commencement of massive codification of the laws of his realm and incessant warfare with the Crown of Aragon. He was also a religious man, who had connections to Catherine of Siena. He was, in short, an "wise legislator, able politician, and valiant warrior."

The Nurra is a geographical region in the northwest of Sardinia, Italy. It is the second largest plain of the island, located between the towns of Sassari, Porto Torres and Alghero. Rafael Sari was a popular Sardinian poet and writer in Catalan. He worked as a school teacher and archivist of Alghero. From 1929 onwards he regularly published, in newspapers and magazines in Alghero in the Algherese dialect of Catalan, articles and poems - several of which won literary awards. His poetry is of an intimate nature and his compositions are often put to music. He was also founder and first secretary of the Cultural Centre for Alghero, along with Rafael Catardi - which now runs the annual literary prize in Alghero which bears his name.

Maria Chessa Lai was a poet writing in the Catalan Algherese dialect. She was three times winner of the Premio Ozieri awarded annually for the best new poetry written in a Sardinian minority language. As a bilingual poet she published her poems simultaneously in Algherese and Italian. The majority of her work was collected together and published in the volume La Mia Mar in 2005. Sixty nine of her poems translated into english were published in 2021, in a bilingual Catalan/English edition, under the title: Collected Poems/ Recull de poesies de l'Alguer -- including this extract from the poem called Marçanella Helichrysum Golden Sun

On 23 September 2021, the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia in exile and current Catalan MEP Carles Puigdemont was arrested at the airport of Alghero by the Italian police just after he was descending from the plane he was traveling from Brussels. The arrest took place following a Spanish Supreme Court Euro-order issued in 2019 and forced the exiled politician to spend the night in the Sardinian prison of Bancari. The purpose of the trip was to meet with Algheresi authorities and Sardinian separatist and at the same time to attend the Aplec International in Adifolk which was to take place in the "Barceloneta of Sardinia" between 24 and 26 September. At a court hearing the day after his arrest, he was released without any precautionary measures, in line with the Italian prosecutor's request.
