Placido Rizzotto Italian trade unionist

Placido Rizzotto was an Italian partisan, socialist peasant and trade union leader from Corleone, who was kidnapped and murdered by Sicilian Mafia boss Luciano Leggio on 10 March 1948. Before he was killed, Rizzotto was performing activist work with farm laborers, trying to help them take over unfarmed land on large estates in the area. A 12-year-old shepherd, Giuseppe Letizia, witnessed Rizzotto's murder and was killed the following day with a lethal injection, made by a Mafia doctor Michele Navarra. In the 1960s, Leggio was acquitted twice of Rizzotto's murder due to lack of evidence.

Caltavuturo massacre

The Caltavuturo massacre took place on January 20, 1893, in Caltavuturo in the Province of Palermo (Sicily), when during the celebration of Saint Sebastian, some 500 peasants returning from the symbolic occupation of 250 hectares of communal land were dispersed by soldiers and policemen, killing 13 and wounding 21 peasants. The claim for land reform was one of the demands of the Fasci Siciliani, a popular movement of democratic and socialist inspiration in 1891-1894.

Pasquale Russo Maresca was an Italian painter best known for his work and research focusing on anatomy, especially the composition of the human face. Maresca sought to explore the anatomical features of the face within his paintings by reconstructing the face and inserting illusion into it. He called this technique "Sette settimi di volto". He divided his professional time between Italy, Mexico, where he lived in Mexico City, and Slovakia.
