The S-design is known first on Challuabamba pottery of the fourth millennium BC, where it may have had symbolism connected with female fertility (Doyon 1977:110), but it survives in modern Peru under the Quechua name pawsa, a fertility symbol often represented on women's shawls in what is called the shawl of the Earth Mother, her pawsa lliklla.
