The Penguin Islands are a cluster of islands and sea stacks located on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The islands are located nearly 20 kilometers from the nearest part of the island of Newfoundland.[ citation needed ]
Historians and naturalists believe that the Penguin Islands were a former breeding ground for the great auk. [1] Petrels were reported nesting in the islands in 1887, with an estimated 900 pairs living on South Penguin Island in 1945. [1]

The Post Office was established in 1892 and the first Postmistress was Belinda Peddle. The town had a population of 435 in 1956 and 277 as of the 2021 Canadian census. The primary industry of the town is fishing. In 2012, the local fish plant closed.

Pushthrough is a resettled fishing community located on Newfoundland and Labrador's south coast, about 20 km northwest of Hermitage. Permanent settlement at Pushthrough happened in 1814, when George Chambers moved there from Gaultois to establish a fishing room and later a store. The community lost population to Gaultois in the 1950s and to Head of Bay d'Espoir in the 1960s. In 1968, virtually all the families with school aged children moved, effectively leading to the downfall of the community.
