People's Energy was an energy supplier based in Shawfair, Scotland, which operated from 2017 until 2021.

History

Co-founders David Pike and Karin Sode launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2017 to launch the company with the promise of returning 75% of profits back to customers. On 31 July 2017, the company successfully raised £487,815 from 2,059 supporters in 199 days. The company received their Ofgem licence and launched in August 2017. [1] [2] [3]

People's Energy Community Interest Company is the parent company of The People's Energy Company Limited, which owns People's Energy (Supply) Limited.

On the 14 September 2021, it was announced that the company would cease trading with immediate effect. Several other companies, including PFP Energy, MoneyPlus Energy and Utility point, also fell within the same fortnight [4] [5] on account of skyrocketing power prices. [6]

Co-op Energy is a British energy supply company based in Warwick that began trading in 2010. It sells renewable electricity and gas to its ethically concerned member owner/customers and is a established large operator, an alternative to the Big Six energy suppliers. Given that its parent is Midcounties Co-operative, it is the only co-operative supplier in the British market, meaning members can receive dividends and/or interest on their trade with the business. Since August 2019, energy supply, billing and customer service have been operated by Octopus Energy.

The Big Six were the United Kingdom's largest retail suppliers of gas and electricity, who dominated the market following liberalisation in the late 1990s. By 2002, six companies – British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, RWE npower, Scottish Power and SSE – had emerged from the 15 former incumbent monopoly suppliers.

Pure Planet was a British energy supply company 24% owned by BP. The company, which was founded in 2015 and based in Bath, England, supplied electricity and gas to domestic customers in the UK. It ceased trading on 13 October 2021 following BP's withdrawal of support. On 17 October, Ofgem appointed Shell Energy as the new supplier of Pure Planet's customers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 United Kingdom natural gas supplier crisis</span>

Starting from August 2021, high European wholesale natural gas prices started severely impacting the United Kingdom. Due to a combination of unfavourable circumstances, including soaring demand of gas in Asia, diminished gas supply from Russia to the European markets, low gas stockpiles, and a series of breakdowns at various electrical facilities, consumers in the United Kingdom faced steep increases in gas prices.
