Plaza Lama is one of the main department store and supermarket chains of the Dominican Republic. The business is managed by Mario Lama Handal and his children. He owns several businesses: Plaza Lama, SuperLama, ElectroLama, Comercial Fila, SGN (Soluciones en Gas Natural) and more.
The Lama company was founded in 1929 in San Pedro de Macorís by Pedro Juan Lama, and his wife, Afife Handal, both palestinian immigrants to the Dominican Republic. It was relocated to Avenue Duarte in Santo Domingo in the 1940s. Mario Lama Handal founded Plaza Lama and expanded his shoe business into a department store. As time went on, further department stores were opened in the city and in La Romana and Santiago.
The Plaza Lama group now runs department stores, ElectroLama electrical goods stores, Súper Lama supermarkets, wholesale distribution, two television channels, and supply of consumer essentials, vehicles and natural gas. The annual profits of Lama Group is said to be approximately 35MM Dollars.

As of 2022, the city and immediate surrounding area had a population of 1,029,110 while the total population is 3,798,699 when including Greater Santo Domingo. The city is coterminous with the boundaries of the Distrito Nacional, itself bordered on three sides by Santo Domingo Province.

Due to this fusion, all Dominicans are of mixed-race heritage, tracing roots mainly to these three sources, the vast majority being evenly mixed, and smaller numbers being predominantly European or African. The demonym Dominican can be traced as far back as the 1621, the name came from Santo Domingo, which was not only the name of the capital city but also of the entire island at the time, Spain used this term to refer to the inhabitants of Spanish colony of Santo Domingo. Recent immigrants and their children, who are legal citizens of the Dominican Republic, can be considered "Dominican" by nationality but not ethnicity due to not having ancestral roots in the country.
Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez was a Dominican military leader, writer, activist, and nationalist politician who was the foremost of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic and bears the title of Father of the Nation. As one of the most celebrated figures in Dominican history, Duarte is considered a folk hero and revolutionary visionary in the modern Dominican Republic, who along with military generals Ramón Matías Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, organized and promoted La Trinitaria, a secret society that eventually led to the Dominican revolt and independence from Haitian rule in 1844 and the start of the Dominican War of Independence.

Punta Cana is a resort town in the easternmost region of the Dominican Republic. It was politically incorporated as the "Verón–Punta Cana township" in 2006, and it is subject to the municipality of Higüey. According to the 2022 census, this township or district had a population of 138,919 inhabitants.

Eastern Central University is a private university in the Dominican Republic, founded in San Pedro de Macorís on October 15, 1970, in the eastern region of the country. The university's Department of Medicine operates an important medical center located in the center of Santo Domingo. At an undergraduate level, the UCE counts with twelve academic departments: Medicine, Dentistry, Bioanalysis, Pharmaceutics, Business Sciences, Systems, Tourism, Production Sciences, Construction Sciences, Natural Resources, Law, and Social and Public Communication. The Dominican State officially recognized the institution through the Presidential Decree N°. 1205, on July 2, 1971.
Ciudad Colonial is the historic central neighborhood of the Dominican Republic's capital Santo Domingo. It is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the Americas. The area has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also known as Zona Colonial or more colloquially as "La Zona".
The Haitian occupation of Santo Domingo was the annexation and merger of then-independent Republic of Spanish Haiti into the Republic of Haiti, that lasted twenty-two years, from February 9, 1822, to February 27, 1844. The part of Hispaniola under Spanish administration was first ceded to France and merged with the French colony of Saint Domingue as a result of the Peace of Basel in 1795. However, with the outbreak of the Haitian Revolution the French lost the western part of the island, while remaining in control of the eastern part of the island until the Spanish recaptured Santo Domingo in 1809.

The founder, Juan Pablo Duarte, and a group of like minded young people, led the struggle to establish the Dominican Republic as a free, sovereign, and independent nation in the 19th century. Their main goal was to protect their newly liberated country from all foreign invasion. They helped bring about the end of the Haitian occupation of Santo Domingo from 1822 to 1844.

The nation's tropical climate, white sand beaches, diverse mountainous landscape and colonial history attracts visitors from around the world. In 2022, the nation's tourism was named the best-performing nation post-pandemic with over 5% visitors more in comparison to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
José Gabriel García was a Dominican army officer, historian, politician, journalist and publisher. He is regarded as a cultural pioneer as well as the "Father of Dominican History." He was the author of "Compendium of History of Santo Domingo", published in four volumes in 1867, 1887, 1900 and 1906 respectively, and made numerous contributions in the fields of culture, literature and education.
Luis de Jesus Rodríguez Gutiérrez is a Dominican attorney, businessman, and entrepreneur. Rodriguez has served as director of the Domino's Pizza franchise in the Dominican Republic and Haiti since 1993, as well as director of car rental company Avis Budget Group since 1997. He currently serves on the board of directors of Universal AFI and as managing director of Investment Fund Casa de Santo Domingo.
