The four national languages of Switzerland are German, French, Italian and Romansh. All but Romansh maintain equal status as official languages at the national level within the Federal Administration of the Swiss Confederation. In some situations, Latin is used, particularly as a single language to denote the country.
The University of Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland was founded in 1537 as a school of theology, before being made a university in 1890. As of fall 2017, about 15,000 students and 3,300 employees study and work at the university. Approximately 1,500 international students attend the university, which has a wide curriculum including exchange programs with world-renowned universities.
The S-300 is a series of initially Soviet and later Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems produced by NPO Almaz, based on the initial S-300P version. The S-300 system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces. Subsequent variations were developed to intercept ballistic missiles. The S-300 system was first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1979, designed for the air defence of large industrial and administrative facilities, military bases and control of airspace against enemy strike aircraft. The system is fully automated, though manual observation and operation are also possible. Components may be near the central command post, or as distant as 40 km. Each radar provides target designation for the central command post. The command post compares the data received from the targeting radars up to 80 km apart, filtering false targets, a difficult task at such great distances. The central command post features both active and passive target detection modes.
Romandy is the French-speaking part of western Switzerland. In 2018, about 2.1 million people, or 25.1% of the Swiss population, lived in Romandy. The bulk of the romand population lives in the Arc Lémanique region along Lake Geneva, connecting Geneva, Vaud and the Lower Valais.
A phasor measurement unit (PMU) is a device used to estimate the magnitude and phase angle of an electrical Phasor quantity like voltage or current in the electricity grid using a common time source for synchronization. Time synchronization is usually provided by GPS and allows synchronized real-time measurements of multiple remote measurement points on the grid. PMUs are capable of capturing samples from a waveform in quick succession and reconstruct the Phasor quantity. The resulting measurement is known as a synchrophasor. These devices can also be used to measure the frequency in the power grid. A typical commercial PMU can report measurements with very high temporal resolution in the order of 30-60 measurements per second. This helps engineers in analyzing dynamic events in the grid which is not possible with traditional SCADA measurements that generate one measurement every 2 or 4 seconds. Therefore, PMUs equip utilities with enhanced monitoring and control capabilities and are considered to be one of the most important measuring devices in the future of power systems. A PMU can be a dedicated device, or the PMU function can be incorporated into a protective relay or other device.
Martin Elmiger is a Swiss former road racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2001 and 2017 for the Post Swiss Team, Phonak, Ag2r–La Mondiale, IAM Cycling and BMC Racing Team squads.
Rolf Järmann is a retired road bicycle racer from Switzerland, who was a professional rider from 1988 to 1999. He twice won the Amstel Gold Race during his career. He was the Swiss National Road Race champion in 1990. He also won the Tour de Pologne 1997.
CCC Pro Team is a UCI WorldTeam title sponsored by CCC, a Polish-based shoe retailer. The team is co-owned by American cyclist Jim Ochowicz, who founded the 7-Eleven Cycling Team, and is the team manager.
Ballet Romand is a dance company located in Vevey, Switzerland. It was founded in 2005 as a non-profit association. The company was founded by American born dancer, Kim White.
Katusha–Alpecin is a Swiss road bicycle racing team which competes at UCI WorldTeam level using Canyon bikes. The team was created in 2008 by Igor Makarov within the framework of the previously established Russian Global Cycling Project, which was intended to help cycling in Russia to move to a qualitatively new level. In 2017 the team took an international direction, still supported by Igor Makarov’s company ARETI International Group, clothing company Katusha Sports and German shampoo manufacturer Alpecin. The team has competed as a UCI ProTeam/WorldTour team since 2009. Joaquim Rodríguez, Alexander Kristoff, Daniel Moreno, Simon Špilak, Filippo Pozzato, Luca Paolini, Ilnur Zakarin, and Tony Martin are some of the most successful riders who have been riding for Katusha.
Urania Genève Sport is a Swiss omnisport club based in Geneva. Its football section was founded in 1896.
Trek–Segafredo is a professional road bicycle racing team at UCI WorldTeam level licensed in the United States. Formerly RadioShack–Nissan, in 2014, Trek took over the ownership of the team and its ProTeam License.
Na Ah-reum is a South Korean road bicycle racer, who currently rides for UCI Women's Team Alé–Cipollini. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Women's road race, finishing 13th.
Bigla Pro Cycling is a professional cycling team based in Switzerland, which competes in elite road bicycle racing events such as the UCI Women's World Tour.
Laetitia du Couëdic de Kerérant is a Franco-Swiss equestrian rider. Her specialty is show jumping, either individually or as part of a team. She was Swiss junior champion in Lugano Switzerland in August 2013, a month after she won a gold medal at The European championship at Vejer de la Frontera Spain. Laetitia du Couëdic started her official CSI programme in 2015 at the CSI5* in Zurich riding Elisa followed by Cagnes-sur-mer France on her recently acquired Cheyenne 111 Z HDC. In October 2013, she won the Grand Prix U25 CSI at Chevenez (JU) and was a wild card entry for the CHI Geneva in Geneva where she was the youngest rider. Laetitia du Couëdic is ambassador of Hermès, the French Luxury goods maker. She is also an ambassador of JustWorld international, a charity project. In 2017 she won the Fontainebleau Grand Prix (CSIOY - Fontainebleau and was Bronze medal at Swiss championships. Laetitia is selected for the Swiss team competing at the European Championships in Samorin
Michael Freiberg is an Australian male track cyclist and road cyclist who has ridden for the national team. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Freiberg was part of the Australian squad which took gold in the team pursuit, and also took an individual silver in the scratch race. He became world champion in the omnium event at the 2011 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. However Cycling Australia did not select him for either the team pursuit or omnium at the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, thus preventing him from defending his title on home soil in Melbourne, and he was similarly not picked for the Australian squad for the 2012 Summer Olympics, being passed over in favour of Glenn O'Shea for the omnium in both championships. Freiberg subsequently put his racing career on hold in order to develop the AIRhub, a resistance training unit designed to simulate mountain riding on flat roads, which is used by a number of UCI WorldTour professionals in their training, including André Greipel, Mat Hayman, Adam Hansen, Esteban Chaves and Luke Durbridge. Freiberg subsequently returned to competition in 2017, joining IsoWhey Sports SwissWellness in May of that year with the aim of competing for Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Queensland. In 2019 Freiberg won the Australian road race title.

The men's road race at the 1996 UCI Road World Championships was the 63rd edition of the event. The race took place on Sunday 13 October 1996 in Lugano, Switzerland. The race was won by Johan Museeuw of Belgium.
