The 2012 Guatemala earthquake occurred on November 7 at 10:35:45 local time. The shock had a moment magnitude of 7.4 and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of VII. The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, 35 kilometres (22 mi) south of Champerico in the department of Retalhuleu. The region is one of many earthquakes, where the Cocos Plate is being subducted along the Middle America Trench beneath the North American and the Caribbean Plates, near their triple junction.

The La Línea corruption case began in Guatemala on April 16, 2015, when the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala and State prosecutors accused a number of politicians in the administration of President Otto Pérez Molina of setting up a customs corruption ring with the help of high-ranking officials in the tax and customs administration. Several demonstrations ensued, calling for the resignation of Pérez Molina and his vice-president Roxana Baldetti. Among the accused were the retired captain Juan Carlos Monzón, and the directors of the Tax Administration Superintendency or Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria, (SAT), an entity analogous to the US Internal Revenue Service. Baldetti resigned in early May, to the joy of thousands of demonstrators.

A second round of the presidential elections was held on 11 August 2019, since no candidate won a majority in the first round. Alejandro Giammattei won the election in the second round of voting.
Paulo Alvarado is a Guatemalan cellist, composer and producer born in Guatemala. He studied architecture at Universidad Rafael Landívar but dropped out in 1983 to become a full-time member of the groundbreaking Guatemalan rock band Alux Nahual. Besides his role in that band, continuing to date, he is notable for exploring the use of the cello in a variety of contexts and is active in classical music. In 1992 he founded Cuarteto Contemporáneo de Guatemala, a string quartet specializing in a repertoire by Guatemalan composers, either written specifically for a string quartet or adapted for it. He has also been involved in the performance and production of Guatemalan music from the colonial period.
