Prime Minister's Youth Programme (named Kamyab Jawan Program from 2019 to 2022) is an initiative by the former prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif established in 2013. [2] The purpose of the programme is to ensure the provision of quality education, and meaningful employment to the youth through integrated, sustainable youth initiatives. The programme provided government-subsidised business loans of up to 25 million rupees, under three tiers: first-tier for 10000 to 1 million, the second tier for 1 million to 10 million, and the third tier for 10 million to 25 million. [3] The programme also provided a skills scholarship program, a talent hunt for youth sports, and a national youth council.

In July 2022 the State Bank of Pakistan paused disbursements to the Kamyab Jawan Program. [4] The programme was revived by the Shehbaz Sharif government at the end of the year. [5] [6]

History

The Prime Minister's Youth Programme is a special initiative launched by the Pakistani government in 2013 - 2018. The Youth Programme comprised several schemes including Prime Minister's Interest-Free Loan Scheme, Prime Minister's Youth Business Loans, Prime Minister's Youth Training Scheme, Prime Minister's Youth Skills Development Scheme, Prime Minister's Scheme for Provision of Laptops and Prime Minister's Scheme for Reimbursement of Fee of Students from the Less Developed Areas. It was headed by Maryam Nawaz Sharif. [7] The total worth of PKR 20 billion was to be spread over 5 years. [8] [9]

On May 14, 2014, the government approved 3.5 billion for interest-free loans up to Rs 50,000 would be provided to 1 million people across the country. Half of the beneficiaries would be women. The loans would be disbursed through Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and each federating unit will get its share as per the NFC Award, with a primary focus on rural areas. Proper loan centers and business support centers were to be set up across the country. [10] [11] [12] The Prime Minister's Programme for the Provision of Laptops to Talented Students (Prime Minister's Laptop Scheme was launched on May 23, 2014. [13] [14] [15]

The Prime Minister Laptop Scheme and other schemes were later abolished by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pakistan Movement for Justice) government as of 2018. [16]

The Prime Minister's Youth Programme was renamed to the Kamyab Jawan Program by the Imran Khan ministry in September 2019 [17] and, after a pause in disbursements from July 2022, [4] was renamed back by the Shehbaz Sharif ministry in December 2022. [5] [6]

Muhammad Ishaq Dar, is a Pakistani politician who currently serves as Foreign Minister of Pakistan and the Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan since 2024. He previously served as Finance Minister of Pakistan from 2022 to 2023, as Leader of the House for the Senate since 2022, and as Leader of the Opposition for the Senate of Pakistan from 2012 to 2013. Maryam Nawaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician, currently serving as the 20th Chief Minister of Punjab, in office since 26 February 2024. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and her initial involvement in public life was through her family’s philanthropic organisations. However, her political career began in earnest in 2012 when she took charge of the election campaign for the 2013 general elections. Following the elections, she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in 2013. Despite her active role, she resigned from the position in 2014 after her appointment was legally challenged in the Lahore High Court.

The Sharif family is a Pakistani political family based in Lahore, Punjab. They belong to the Bhat Kashmiri caste which is a large community living in many districts of Punjab. They have had two members of the family that became prime ministers of Pakistan them being Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif respectively.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2018 Pakistani general election</span>

General elections were held in Pakistan on 25 July 2018 to elect the members of the 15th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan, the Pakistan Muslim League, led by Shehbaz Sharif, and the Pakistan People's Party, led by Bilawal Bhutto. The PTI won the most seats in the National Assembly but fell short of a majority; the party subsequently formed a coalition government with several smaller parties. At the provincial level, the PTI remained the largest party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP); the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) retained its dominance in Sindh; and the newly formed Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) emerged as the largest party in Balochistan. In Punjab, the result was a hung parliament, with the Pakistan Muslim League (N) winning the most seats. However, after several independent MPAs joined the PTI, the latter became the largest party and was able to form a government.

Marriyum Aurangzeb is a Pakistani politician who currently serves as Senior Minister in the Government of Punjab, in office since March 2024.

The Prime Minister's Laptop Scheme was an initiative undertaken by then Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as a part of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme. The program aimed at provision of laptops to deserving students studying in public and semi-public universities throughout Pakistan. The Government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf abolished this scheme along with many others.

Shehbaz Sharif served the longest tenure in history as chief minister of Punjab spanning over 11 years of rule. His tenures involved the 1997 Nawaz Government, the 2008 Pakistan Peoples Party's regime and the 2013 PML-N's rule. His prominent contribution involves infrastructure development, transit projects and power plants. He has developed flyovers, road infrastructures, transit services and power projects. He is best known for his dedication, working speed, ability to execute mega projects and quick actions. However, he is also criticised over lack of priorities, spending development funds mostly in Lahore and large cities, keeping major power and assignments within himself, nepotism, conflict of interests, and misuse of authority by opposition parties.

There was a by-election in the Pakistani parliamentary constituency of NA-120 on 17 September 2017, following the decision given by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to disqualify Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from public office. PML (N) candidate Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif secured 61,745 votes and defeated Yasmin Rashid of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">No-confidence motion against Imran Khan</span> 2022 removal from office of the Pakistani prime minister

In April 2022, a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan led to his removal as the prime minister of Pakistan. Based largely on the Westminster system of legislature, the prime minister commands confidence of the majority of the lower house of Parliament, the National Assembly of Pakistan, under clause (2A) of Article 91 of the Constitution. Numerous opposition parties joined forces to file the motion of no confidence against Imran Khan in the National Assembly. It ultimately led to the removal of Khan from office as a majority passed the motion in the Lower House.

The Lahore–Sahiwal–Bahawalnagar Motorway is an upcoming motorway undertaking in Punjab, Pakistan. The project received approval from the executive board of the National Highway Authority (NHA) within their yearly maintenance plan for the period 2023–24. This motorway aims to establish a connection between the cities of Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Sahiwal, and Bahawalnagar. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved over Rs.263.79 billion for this project.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Second Shehbaz Sharif ministry</span> Federal Cabinet of Pakistan since 2024

After the 2024 general elections in Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif's second ministry was formed. Shehbaz Sharif from the Pakistan Muslim League-N was elected as the Prime Minister. President Asif Ali Zardari took the oath of office. The new Cabinet composition has been described as a "Lean", with its composition being influenced by the need of the new government to respond quickly to the current economic crisis. The Cabinet includes PML-N, MQM(P), PML(Q), IPP and independents.
