History

Little is known of the club other than that it competed in the FA Cup in 1899. Billy Betts, the famous Sheffield Wednesday and England player, started his career with Pyebank.

FA Cup knockout competition in English association football

The FA Cup, also known officially as The Football Association Challenge Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association. For sponsorship reasons, from 2015 through to 2019 it is also known as The Emirates FA Cup. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, the FA Women's Cup.

William "Billy" Betts was an English footballer who played for The Wednesday, as well as the English national side. Betts played as a centre-half and made a total of 143 appearances in two spells for The Wednesday, scoring four goals.

1899 FA Cup Final

The 1899 FA Cup Final was contested by Sheffield United and Derby County at Crystal Palace. Sheffield United won 4–1, with four second-half goals scored by Jack Almond, Walter Bennett, Billy Beer and Fred Priest after John Boag had scored a first-half opener for County. This was Derby's second successive losing final and worse was to come in that regard in 1903 against Bury. The contest was photographed by Henry Jasper Redfern.

Harry Thickitt English footballer and manager

Henry Thickitt was a professional footballer and Manager. Born in Hexthorpe, Doncaster he played as a defender primarily for Sheffield United with whom he won the First Division once, the FA Cup twice and gained two caps for England. He then went on to achieve relative success as the manager of Bristol City.

Walter Bennett was a professional footballer who is best known for his time with Sheffield United, where he played as a forward. He also made two appearances for England in 1901.

The 1898–1899 FA Cup was the 28th season of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup. The cup was won by Sheffield United, who defeated Derby County 4–1 in the final of the competition, played at Crystal Palace in London.

John Nicholson was club secretary for Sheffield United for over 30 years. During this period the club did not employ a 'manager' but Nicholson undertook many of the duties currently associated with a modern-day football manager.

The 1898–99 Football League season was Small Heath's seventh in the Football League and their fifth in the Second Division. With four games of the seasons remaining, they were in fourth place, two points below the promotion positions, but a draw and three defeats in those last four games left them with an eight-place finish in the 18-team league. They also took part in the 1898–99 FA Cup, entering at the third qualifying round and progressing to the second round proper, at which stage they were eliminated by Stoke after a replay. In local cup competitions, Small Heath reached the second round of the Birmingham Cup and Staffordshire Cup, and lost to West Bromwich Albion in the first round of the Mayor of Birmingham's Charity Cup.
