The River Cities LocoMotives were a professional indoor football team based in Huntington, West Virginia in 2001. The team competed in the inaugural season of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL). The "Locos" played their home games at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Official team colors were: Crimson, silver, black and gray.

The LocoMotives, coached by Melvin Cunningham, finished the 2001 season with a record of 1-13, and declining fan support caused the team to cease operations after their first season.

Professional indoor football would return to Huntington five years later when the Huntington Heroes began play in 2006.

Big Sandy Superstore Arena

The Big Sandy Superstore Arena, originally known as the Huntington Civic Center and later as the Huntington Civic Arena, is a municipal complex located in the downtown area of Huntington, West Virginia, one block west of Pullman Square. The Big Sandy Superstore Arena consists of a 9,000-seat multi-purpose arena and an attached conference center. It is home to numerous concerts and events, and was the home of the Huntington Hammer of the Ultimate Indoor Football League for 2011. Marshall University's graduation ceremonies are also held at the arena.

Canton Legends sports team

The Canton Legends was a professional indoor football team based out of Canton, Ohio. They were a charter member of the American Indoor Football Association, which played their first season under the name Atlantic Indoor Football League, and their second season as the American Indoor Football League. They played their home games at Canton Memorial Civic Center. The team name is in reference to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, since Canton is where the building is located.

The Reading Express were a professional indoor football team based in Reading, Pennsylvania. They were most recently a member of the United Conference of the Indoor Football League (IFL). The Express began play in 2006, as an expansion team of the American Indoor Football League. The team was originally going to be named the Reading RiverRats, but passed on that name in favor of the "Reading Express." Huntington Heroes

The Huntington Heroes were a professional indoor football franchise and member of the American Indoor Football Association (AIFA). The Heroes played their home games during their inaugural 2006 season at the Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse in Huntington, West Virginia before moving to the larger Big Sandy Superstore Arena for the 2007 and 2009 seasons. The Heroes were the second indoor football franchise for Huntington, following the River Cities LocoMotives, who played one season (2001) in the National Indoor Football League, and were followed by the Huntington Hammer in 2011. The Heroes were usually known for featuring many former Marshall University football players from the Marshall Thundering Herd program located in Huntington.

Ultimate Indoor Football League sports league

The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) was a regional professional indoor football league that began its inaugural season on February 18, 2011 as the Ultimate Indoor Football League before playing as the United Indoor Football League in 2012, then switched back to "Ultimate" for the 2013 season. After the 2014 season, the league merged with X-League Indoor Football.

The West Virginia Wizards were announced on October 29, 1997, as a trial member of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL). The Wizards were to play a single exhibition game against the Utah Catzz on December 6, 1997. The PIFL commissioner, Richard "Dick" Suess, scheduled the pre-season indoor football game in Charleston, West Virginia, to gauge fan interest.

The West Virginia Wild were a proposed professional indoor football team based in Huntington, West Virginia. The team was slated to become a member of the Continental Indoor Football League as an expansion team in 2009. The Wild were the third attempt at indoor football in Huntington, the first being the American Indoor Football League member, the Huntington Heroes from 2006 to 2008, and the second being the River Cities LocoMotives of the National Indoor Football League in 2001. Tennessee Rail Runners

The Tennessee Rail Runners were a professional indoor football team proposed to begin play in the Ultimate Indoor Football League for its 2012 season. Based in East Ridge, Tennessee, the Rail Runners would have played their home games at Camp Jordan Arena as a member of the UIFL's new South Division, joining the Rome Rampage, Florida Tarpons, Mississippi Hound Dogs, Carolina Aviators, and Lakeland Raiders as well as the existing Eastern Kentucky Drillers and Huntington Hammer.

The Carolina Aviators is a professional indoor football team to begin play in the Elite Indoor Football League for its 2019 season. The Aviators are based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, were to play their home games at the MVP Sports Factory. The Aviators would have been the fifth team to play in the newly formed Southern Conference of the UIFL, but the team failed expansion and never played a game.
