Robert Thomas Hamilton (died 1677) was a military officer who served in Denmark and Norway. He served as the first County Governor of Lister og Mandal county from 1671 until around 1675. [1]

Robert Hamilton was born in Scotland. He began as an officer for army for the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway in 1657, serving in the cavalry. This was during a time of an alliance between the House of Stuart who ruled in Britain and the House of Oldenburg who ruled in Denmark-Norway. He was promoted to captain in Norway in 1658 and became a colonel watchmaster in 1660. Hamilton's promotion continued and he made lieutenant colonel in 1661 due to a commendation by King Charles II. He was also named a Knight of the Elephant the same year. In 1668, King Frederik III of Denmark-Norway ordered the Governor-general of Norway to pay 2000 rigsdaler of the army's money to Hamilton in advance of his wages. [2] [3]

In 1670, Hamilton left the cavalry and became commander of Kronborg Castle and was also appointed as the County Governor of Lister og Mandals amt in 1671. These appointments happened after years of service by the Scotsman to the Danish-Norwegian Oldenburg monarchy. He continued as governor until he resigned around 1675 when the Scanian War broke out between the kingdoms of Sweden and Denmark-Norway. At some point Hamilton raised a marine regiment of about 1,000 men for the navy at his own expense. These marines were still in service in the forces of Rigsadmiral Gustaf Otto Stenbock in 1679, although Hamilton himself died before that date. Hamilton is said to have died on 16 February 1677 in Norway and was buried at the King's cost in Copenhagen on 7 May 1677. [2] [3]

After the union between Denmark and Norway ended in 1814. Holm did not return to his birth country of Denmark, but stayed in Norway, and died in Christiansand in 1817.

The diocesan governor was the head government official that oversaw the civil administration within a diocese in the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway and later in Norway. The bishop of the diocese oversaw the religious administration in the diocese and together, the two officials were the highest officials in the diocese, reporting directly to the king.

Adam Ditlev Wedell-Wedellsborg (1782-1827) was a Dano-Norwegian government official. He served as the County Governor of Lister og Mandal amt from 1810 until 1814. When he got the governorship he was only 28 years old. He was a baron and a member of the Wedel family, an old noble family from Germany. When the union between Denmark and Norway ended in 1814, he resigned as governor, left Norway and moved to Denmark. He died in the town of Assens in 1827, at only 44 years old.

Magnus Theiste was a Norwegian government official. He served as the County Governor of Lister og Mandal county from 1768 to 1771 and of Nordre Bergenhus county from 1771 to 1779.

Jørgen Hansen Burchart was a Danish-Norwegian government official. He served as the County Governor of Nyborg og Tranekjaer county in Denmark during 1692 and then of Lister og Mandal county from 1692 to 1699.

Vilhelm Reesen (1675-1745) was a Norwegian officer and government official. He served as a naval officer from 1689 until 1718. He was then appointed as the County Governor of Lister og Mandal county from 1718 until his death in 1745.

Andreas Undall (1669-1728) was a Norwegian government official. He served as the County Governor of Lister og Mandal county from 1699 to 1711 and then he was the Diocesan Governor of Bergenhus stiftamt from 1711 until his death in 1728.
