Ron the Greek (foaled May 9, 2007) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of the 2013 Jockey Club Gold Cup . [1]

The Jockey Club Gold Cup, established in 1919, is a thoroughbred flat race open to horses of either gender three-years-old and up. It is typically the main event of the fall meeting at Belmont Park, just as the Belmont Stakes is of the spring meeting and the Travers Stakes is of the summer meeting at Saratoga. The past winners of the Gold Cup are a veritable who's who of award-winning Hall of Fame horses, including Easy Goer, Man o' War, Cigar, Skip Away, Curlin, Slew o' Gold, John Henry, Affirmed, Forego, Shuvee, Damascus, Buckpasser, Kelso, Sword Dancer, Nashua, Citation, Whirlaway and War Admiral. Despite the current $1,000,000 purse and Grade 1 status, the stature of the race has suffered somewhat in recent years thanks to the emergence of the Breeders' Cup Classic held not long afterward, as well as a change in distance to 1 14 miles in 1990, reducing its distinctiveness.

Career

Ron the Greek's first race was on October 11, 2009 at Hoosier Park, which he won. [1]

Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino is a racino including a standardbred racetrack located in Anderson, Indiana, approximately 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis. It is owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment. The facility features live harness racing from April through October, casino gaming, restaurants, a gift shop, and entertainment.

Ron grabbed his first graded race win on January 23, 2019 at the Lecomte Stakes, a grade 3 race. [1]

The Lecomte Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is a Grade III Stakes race for three-year-old horses willing to run 1 mile and 70 yards on the dirt. It has also been raced at 8 furlongs and 8.5 furlongs. It currently offers a purse of $200,000, and is normally run in mid-January. Trainers use it as a prep race for the Louisiana Derby, and potentially the Kentucky Derby.

Ron picked up some minor wins in 2011, winning both the Queens County Stakes and the Sunny and Mild Stakes in late 2011.

He then captured the biggest win of his career up to the point by winning the Grade 1 2012 Santa Anita Handicap. The following month, he came in second at the 2012 Oaklawn Handicap. [1]

The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses four years old and up and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during the winter racing season. The ten-furlong Santa Anita Handicap offers a purse of $1 million.

The Oaklawn Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in April at Oaklawn Park Race Track in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Ron then captured another Grade 1 win, this time at the 2012 Stephen Foster Handicap. [1] [2]

Stephen Foster Handicap

The Stephen Foster Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run in mid-June near the end of the Churchill Downs Spring Meet in Louisville, Kentucky. The race is named in honor of famed composer Stephen Foster, who wrote numerous melodies including "My Old Kentucky Home" which is the song that is annually played as the Kentucky Derby field parades on the track. It is run on the dirt at a distance of 1 18 miles for three-year-olds and up.

On September 28, 2013, Ron won the Grade 1 2013 Jockey Club Gold Cup. [1] [3]

He then finished off his career by getting wins in January and February of 2015 in Saudi Arabia, winning the Crown Prince Cup and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup.
