Biggar is home to Prairie Malt Ltd. and is situated in the heart of Canada's prime barley-growing region. The Miller Western Palo Salt Mine is located 27 km west of Biggar. The 25 staff members produce sodium sulfate for shipping throughout Canada and the central United States. The major communities are Biggar (2,243), Wilkie (1,282) and Langham (1,145).

Alfred Pullen Gleave was a Member of Parliament for Saskatoon—Biggar, Canada from 25 June 1968 to 9 May 1974. He was a farmer and grain grower, and became an outspoken agricultural advocate. He was born in Ontario, educated in one room school houses of Saskatchewan. Turning 19 at the start of the 1930s, he understood the many difficulties farmers faced during this era of drought and Depression. He also lived through farming advances, technological changes and industrial revolution of the 1940s and 1950s which followed World War II. In the early 20th century, Gleave helped to establish many varied agricultural organizations. As a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP), he became a Member of Parliament on two occasions. Gleave served as an Agriculture Committee member. He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Kelly Block is a Canadian politician representing the electoral district of Carlton Trail—Eagle Creek since 2015. She was first elected in the 2008 Canadian federal election to serve as the Member of Parliament for the Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar district. Prior to her election to the House of Commons, Block served two terms as mayor of Waldheim, Saskatchewan. Block was Waldheim's first female mayor, and also served as chairperson of the Gabriel Springs Health District. Block was later appointed to the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority when the government of Saskatchewan amalgamated its health districts. Block ran unsuccessfully for the Saskatchewan Party nomination for the provincial Martensville constituency by-election in November 2006 against Nancy Heppner.

The closest town is Biggar to the southeast. Biggar railway station is a divisional point for the Canadian National Railway (CNR). Oban had the last provincial interlocking tower at the Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway level crossing, which was constructed in 1910 and closed in 1990.
