A highway is any public or private road or other public way on land. It is used for major roads, but also includes other public roads and public tracks: It is not an equivalent term to controlled-access highway, or a translation for autobahn, autoroute, etc.
The M11 motorway is a 55-mile (88.5 km) motorway that runs north from the North Circular Road (A406) in South Woodford to the A14, northwest of Cambridge, England. Originally proposed as early as 1915, various plans were considered throughout the 1960s, with final construction being undertaken between 1975 and 1980. The motorway was opened in stages, with the first stage opening in June 1975, and the completed motorway becoming fully operational in February 1980. Running from South Woodford to Girton, the motorway provides direct access to Harlow, a large new town, as well as the city of Cambridge and since 2002, the motorway has greatly improved access to London Stansted Airport, the fourth busiest airport in the United Kingdom.
The autoroute system is a network of freeways within the province of Quebec, Canada, operating under the same principle of controlled access as the Interstate Highway System in the United States and the 400-series highways in neighbouring Ontario. The Autoroutes are the backbone of Quebec's highway system, spanning almost 2,400 km (1,491 mi). The speed limit on the Autoroutes is generally 100 km/h (62 mph) in rural areas and 70–90 km/h (43–56 mph) in urban areas; most roads are made of asphalt concrete.
The China National Highways (CNH/Guodao) is a network of trunk roads across mainland China. Although they are called "highways", they are not necessarily freeways. However, like expressways, a toll is sometimes charged.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is an autonomous agency of the Government of India, set up in 1988 and is responsible for management of a network of over 50,000 km of National Highways out of 1,15,000 km in India. It is a nodal agency of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. NHAI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Space Research Organisation for satellite mapping of highways. National Highway 43 is a primary national highway in India. It traverses from Gulganj in Madhya Pradesh, through Chhattisgarh and terminates at Chaibasa in Jharkhand. This national highway is 1,062.5 km (660.2 mi) long. Before renumbering of national highways NH-6 was variously numbered as old national highways 78, 23 & 33.
National Highway 703 is a National Highway in Northern India. NH 703 connects Jalandar in Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana, running a distance of 169 km (105 mi). National Highway 703 starts at the junction of NH 3 at Jalandar and traverses down to Sirsa to meet NH 9.
The Philippine highway network refers to the highway system of the Philippines. It is a network of national roads owned and maintained by the Department of Public Works and Highways which are organized into three classifications depending on their function or purpose they serve within the road network: national primary, national secondary, and national tertiary roads. The national roads connecting major cities are numbered N1–N82. They are mostly single and dual carriageways linking two or more cities.
