Royal Excelsior Sport's Club was a Belgian football club from Brussels that played in the first division from 1908 to 1913.

The Belgian First Division A is the top league competition for association football clubs in Belgium. Following the 2015–16 season it was renamed from the Belgian Pro League (officially known as Jupiler Pro League. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Belgian First Division B. Seasons run from late July to early May, with teams playing 30 matches each in the regular season, and then entering play-offs 1 or play-offs 2 according to their position in the regular season. Play-offs 1 are contested by the top 6 clubs in the regular season, with each club playing each other twice. Play-offs 2 are contested by teams ranked 7 to 15 in the regular season, divided in two groups of 6 teams playing each other twice. The team finishing in 16th place is relegated. As of 2014 the league was sponsored by AB InBev, brewers of Jupiler beer, and officially known as Jupiler Pro League.

History

It was founded in 1904 as Excelsior S.C. de Bruxelles and it received the matricule n°20. It achieved its best ranking in 1909 and 1910 with a 7th place on 12. In 1913 it was relegated to the second division as it finished last with 2 points from 2 draws. It there played four consecutive seasons before a relegation to the third division. In 1929 the club changed its name to Royal Excelsior Sport's Club and it retired from football six seasons later. The field hockey section of the club is still alive as of 2005.

The Belgian Second Division was the second-highest division in the Belgian football league system, one level below the Belgian Pro League. It was founded by the Royal Belgian Football Association in 1909 and folded in 2016, when it was replaced by the Belgian First Division B.

The Belgian Third Division was the third highest level in Belgian football. It had two leagues of 18 teams each at the same level. This competition, originally known as the Belgian Promotion was first played in the 1926-27 season with three leagues, then with four leagues between 1931 and 1952. From 1952 on, only two leagues remained and the competition was named the Third Division. Originally set to 16 clubs, the number of clubs in each division was increased in 2009 to 18 clubs. At the end of the regular season, both league winners promoted to the second division and a play-off was played to determine a possible third club to promote. The champion of the third division was determined after a two-legged match between the winners of the two leagues. If those matches ended in a draw, a third match was played on a neutral ground. However, in recent years this final game was not organised anymore due to lack of interest. In 2016, the Belgian Third Division was replaced by the Belgian Second Amateur Division.

Field hockey, known in most countries just as hockey, is a team game of the hockey family. The earliest origins of the game date back to the Middle Ages in England, Scotland, France and the Netherlands. The game can be played on grass, water turf, artificial turf or synthetic field as well as an indoor board surface. Each team plays with eleven players, including the goalie. Players use sticks made out of wood, carbon fibre, fibre glass or a combination of carbon fibre and fibre glass in different quantities to hit a round, hard, plastic ball. The length of the stick depends on the player's individual height. Only one face of the stick is allowed to be used. Goalies often have a different kind of stick, however they can also use an ordinary field hockey stick. The specific goal-keeping sticks have another curve at the end of the stick, this is to give them more surface area to save the ball. The uniform consists of shin guards, shoes, shorts, a mouth guard and a jersey. Today, the game is played globally, with particular popularity throughout Western Europe, South Asia, Southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and parts of the United States. Known simply as "hockey" in many territories, the term "field hockey" is used primarily in Canada and the United States where ice hockey is more popular. In Sweden the term "landhockey" is used and to some degree also in Norway where it is governed by Norway's Bandy Association.

The club was one of the first to register in Belgium, as it became a member of the Belgian Football Association in 1896 and received the matricule n°8.

The Eerste Divisie 2009–10 is the 54th season of the Eerste Divisie since its establishment in 1956. Last year's winners were VVV-Venlo; they, with runner-up RKC Waalwijk, after a promotion/relegation playoff win over De Graafschap, were promoted to the Eredivisie. Twenty teams take part in the 2009-2010 season: eighteen from the 2008-2009 season and relegated teams FC Volendam and De Graafschap. The season's champion will be promoted to the Eredivisie, while eight other teams, the second- through fifth-place finishers and period winners, will face the Eredivisie's sixteenth- and seventeenth-place finishers in promotion/relegation playoffs. For the first time since 1971, Eerste Divisie clubs will also face relegation; the last- and second-to-last-place teams will relegated to the new Topklasse, in which will play the best teams from Dutch amateur football. The 2009–10 Eerste Divisie is sponsored by the Belgian beer brand Jupiler and so the official name of the league is Jupiler League.

The term Rotterdam derby refers to the local derbies in Rotterdam played between two of the three professional football clubs Feyenoord, Sparta Rotterdam or Excelsior and in early history Xerxes. It specifically refers to individual matches between the clubs, but can also be used to describe the general ongoing rivalry between the clubs, players and/or fans.
