SMA was founded on August 2, 1943 in Florence by Giuseppe Salvini, Lorenzo Fernandes, Enrico Bocci. In 1948, the development of radar equipment was influenced by Nello Carrara. In 1988, the EFIM public group purchased a majority interest in the company's capital, controlling 98.8% of the shares. Following the collapse of EFIM, in 1988, "SMA" was merged with Officine Galileo, part of Finmeccanica.

The sergeant major of the Army (SMA) is a unique non-commissioned rank and position of office in the United States Army. The holder of this rank and position is the most senior enlisted soldier in the Army, unless an enlisted soldier is serving as the senior enlisted advisor to the chairman. The SMA is appointed to serve as a spokesman to address the issues of enlisted soldiers to all officers, from warrant officers and lieutenants to the Army's highest positions. As such, they are the senior enlisted advisor to the chief of staff of the Army. The exact duties vary depending on the chief of staff, though much of the SMA's time is spent traveling throughout the Army, observing training and talking with soldiers and their families.

The MM/SPQ-2 was an Italian naval radar produced by SMA. It was a multifunction radar performing the functions of surface and low altitude search as well as navigation. The radar equipped many ships of the Italian Navy, including the Alpino-class frigates, Andrea Doria-class cruisers, Audace-class destroyers, Bergamini-class frigates and Vittorio Veneto, and, in its upgraded SPQ-2D form, was exported to Canada for the Iroquois-class destroyers. It was developed into the MM/SPS-702 and MM/SPS-703.
