USS Freedom (ID-3024) was a cargo and transport ship in the United States Navy during World War I. Originally SS Wittekind for the North German Lloyd line, the ship also served as USAT Iroquois and USAT Freedom after being seized by the United States in 1917.
Sadko was a Soviet icebreaker known for its role in scientific expeditions in the Arctic. Built as SS Lintrose in 1913 for ferry service in Newfoundland, she was sold to the government of the Russian Empire in 1915 and renamed Sadko. The Smolensk was a ship built in England in 1901, ostensibly as a merchant vessel for the Russian state-controlled Dobroflot shipping line, but designed to double as a cruiser of the Imperial Russian Navy, in which role she adopted the name Rion. The ship saw active service in the Russo-Japanese War.
