The Saint Peter's Peacocks basketball team is the basketball team that represents Saint Peter's University in Jersey City, New Jersey. The school's team currently competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and was previously led by fourth-year head coach Shaheen Holloway, who left Saint Peter's on March 30, 2022 for Seton Hall.^[2]

History

In 2022, they gained national recognition after becoming the tenth No. 15 seed in history to upset a No. 2 seed, after knocking off the Kentucky Wildcats.^[3]^[4] They then became the third No. 15 seed in tournament history, and the third in nine years, to make the Sweet 16;^[5] they further continued their run, becoming the first No. 15 seed in tournament history to advance to the Elite Eight, after defeating Purdue.^[6]^[7]

Saint Peter's University is a private Jesuit university in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was founded as Saint Peter's College in 1872 by the Society of Jesus. The university offers over 60 undergraduate and graduate programs to more than 2,600 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. The 2017–18 Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team represented Villanova University in the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Shaheen Holloway is an American basketball coach and former point guard, who is the current the head men's basketball coach for Seton Hall Pirates. He played college basketball at Seton Hall from 1996 to 2000. He then played professionally for 7 seasons. He served as the head coach Saint Peter's Peacocks (2018–2022)

The Peacocks were led by third-year head coach Shaheen Holloway. Due to renovations at their regular home arena, Yanitelli Center, they played their home games at John J. Moore Athletics Center, on the campus of New Jersey City University, as members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. They finished the season 14–11, 10–8 in MAAC play to finish in a tie for third place. As the No. 3 seed in the MAAC Tournament, they defeated No. 11 seed Rider in the quarterfinals, and then lost to No. 7 seed Fairfield 47–52 in the semifinals.

The 2021–22 Seton Hall Pirates men's basketball team represented Seton Hall University in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They were led by 12th-year head coach Kevin Willard. The Pirates played their home games at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, New Jersey as members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 21–11, 11–8 in Big East play to finish a tie for fifth place. They defeated Georgetown in the first round of the Big East Tournament before losing in the quarterfinals to UConn. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 8 seed in the South region where they lost in the First Round to TCU.

As the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament, they advanced to the championship game, where they defeated Monmouth to win the conference's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011, receiving a No. 15 seed in the East Region.

The 2021–22 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men's basketball season began with practices in October 2021, followed by the start of the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in November. Douglas Ryan Edert is an American college basketball player for the Saint Peter's Peacocks of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). He is best known for his integral part in the team’s historic underdog run to the Elite Eight in the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
