Sandbach School is a free school in Sandbach, Cheshire, north-west England. It was established in 1677 by local philanthropists, including Richard Lea, who donated the land for the school, and Francis Welles, who helped to fund the schoolhouse. It was located at Egerton Lodge, Middlewich Road, before moving into a new set of buildings designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1851. It became an independent school in 1945, and a state-funded independent grammar school in 1955. It became a state-funded independent school accepting boys of all abilities in 1979. In 2011, it became one of the country's first free schools.

The Mid-Cheshire line is a railway line in the north-west of England that runs from Chester to Edgeley Junction, Stockport; it connects Chester with Manchester Piccadilly, via Knutsford. After Chester Northgate closed in 1969, the section between Mickle Trafford Junction and Chester was used for freight trains only until it closed in 1992; from Mickle Trafford, passenger trains use the Chester–Warrington line to Chester General instead. The route taken by passenger trains has changed over the years and now differs considerably from the original. Between 2001 and 2014, passenger journeys on the line increased to over 1.7 million per year. A near doubling of the passenger service was expected to occur from December 2018, however this did not materialise.

Wheelock & Sandbach railway station was built by the North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) to serve the Cheshire village of Wheelock. Originally conceived as a line between Stoke-upon-Trent and Liverpool, the short line from Lawton Junction to Ettiley Heath was opened as a goods traffic only line in 1852. Subsequently, the line was extended to join with the London and North Western Railway at Sandbach in 1866. Towards the end of the 19th century the NSR decided to introduce a passenger service on the line and Sandbach (Wheelock) railway station was opened in July 1893 as the terminus of the new service from Harecastle.
