Keith Gilchrist (born 1941), known professionally as Sandy Scott, is an Australian singer and television compere. He was a regular guest on the television music program Bandstand and released many records, including the top 25 hit "Wallpaper Roses".

Early life

Gilchrist was born in 1941 in Bondi, the only son of English migrants. [1] He attended Double Bay Public School and then Cleveland Street High School before working in a bank. [2]

Career

When Gilchrist started singing with local bands, his neighbour, disc jockey Bob Rogers, suggested he change his name to Sandy Scott. [2] After appearing on television shows like Six O'Clock Rock and the Johnny O'Keefe Show, [2] Scott signed a ten-year deal to appear exclusively on Bandstand . [3]

Signing with CBS Records in 1963, Scott released three singles before signing with the Jacobsen family's ATA Records. [4] His biggest hit was "Wallpaper Roses" which reached #4 in Sydney. [5] His album Great Scott, It's Sandy achieved gold status. [6]

Scott would go on to appear in cabaret and musical theatre. [7]

In 1971, Scott had a short residency as host of the Australian music show The Sound of Music. [6] In 1984, he took over as host of the television quiz show Family Feud . In 1979, Scott hosted the game show $10,000 Winner Circle. [8]

Personal life

Scott married his manager Carolyn Jacobsen, the sister of singer Col Joye, in 1981. [9] They have two sons. [10]

Kevin Stephen Johnson is an Australian singer-songwriter. Popular in the 1970s, his biggest hit is "Rock and Roll ", which peaked at No. 4 on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart in 1973. He also had a top 20 hit with "Bonnie Please Don't Go" in 1971. "Rock and Roll" is one of the most covered songs written by an Australian with 27 different artists recording the song in 1975 alone. Covers of "Rock and Roll " came from fellow Australians, Col Joye and Dig Richards, and from international artists, Mac Davis, Terry Jacks, Gary Glitter, Joe Dassin, The Cats and Tom Jones. Davis' rendition became the highest charting version on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 15 in 1975.

Colin Frederick Jacobsen, better known by his stage name Col Joye, is an Australian pioneer rock singer-songwriter, musician and entrepreneur with a career spanning almost sixty-seven years, starting from the late 50s. Joye was the first Australian rock and roll singer to have a number one record Australia-wide, and experienced a string of chart successes in the early Australian rock and roll scene, performing with his then band the Joy Boys.

Bandstand is an Australian live pop music, variety television program screened from November 1958 to June 1972. Featuring both local and international music artists, and produced in-house at the studios of the Nine Network in Willoughby, New South Wales, it was originally broadcast only in New South Wales, It became a national program in the early 1960s as the network expanded into other Australian states. The host of Bandstand for its entire existence was radio presenter and television newsreader Brian Henderson.

Broderick Smith was an English-born Australian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and sometime actor. He was a member of 1970s bands Sundown, Carson and the Dingoes, the 1980s Broderick Smith's Big Combo, and he recorded and performed solo and in duos. He acted on stage in the 1973 Australian version of the rock opera, Tommy, and in minor roles in the 1990s TV series Blue Heelers, Snowy River: The McGregor Saga and State Coroner. Leo de Kroo is an Australian pop and country music singer, and an accomplished luthier. For much of the 1960s he was a regular performer on Bandstand, a pop music TV show, hosted by Brian Henderson. De Kroo was one half of The De Kroo Bros. As The De Kroo Bros, they also appeared on other pop music shows.

George Henry "Harry" Purvis, AFC was an Australian pioneer aviator, engineer, airline pilot, air-force pilot and author. He was the engineer responsible for maintenance of the famed Southern Cross aircraft. Purvis often flew as co-pilot with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and was the last person to fly the Southern Cross. Purvis was co-pilot to P. G. Taylor on the first flight across the lower Pacific Ocean from Australia to South America, landing in Chile in 1951.
