Early life

Atiqullah was borb in 1933 in Tangail District, East Bengal, British Raj. He completed a Masters in Political Science from the University of Dhaka. [2]

East Bengal was a geographically noncontiguous province of the Dominion of Pakistan covering Bangladesh. With its coastline on the Bay of Bengal, it bordered India and Burma. It was located very near to, but did not share a border with, Nepal, China, the Kingdom of Sikkim and the Kingdom of Bhutan. Its capital was Dacca.

The British Raj was the rule by the British Crown on the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947. The rule is also called Crown rule in India, or direct rule in India. The region under British control was commonly called India in contemporaneous usage, and included areas directly administered by the United Kingdom, which were collectively called British India, and those ruled by indigenous rulers, but under British tutelage or paramountcy, and called the princely states. The whole was also more formally called the Indian Empire. Career

Atiqullah worked as a journalist after graduation. He was involved with the Bengali language movement in 1952. In 1971, he fought in the Bangladesh Liberation war. He wrote a number of notable short stories. In 1974 he was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award by the Bangla Academy for his writings. He translated books from English, Russian, and Urdu to Bengali. In the 1980s he was involved with protests against the General Hussain Mohammad Ershad, the military dictator of Bangladesh. [2]

The Bengali Language Movement was a political movement in former East Bengal advocating the recognition of the Bengali language as an official language of the then-Dominion of Pakistan in order to allow its use in government affairs, the continuation of its use as a medium of education, its use in media, currency and stamps, and to maintain its writing in the Bengali script.

The Bangla Academy Literary Award, is given by the Bangla Academy of Bangladesh in recognition of creative genius in advancement and overall contribution in the field of Bengali language and literature.

Death

Atiqullah died in 1998. [2]
