The 1972 Winter Olympics, officially the XI Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as Sapporo 1972, was a winter multi-sport event held from February 3 to February 13, 1972, in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. It was the first Winter Olympic Games to take place outside Europe and North America.
Ulrich Wehling is a retired German skier who won the nordic combined event in the Winter Olympics three consecutive times, in 1972, 1976, and 1980. Wehling was the first man to win three consecutive gold medals in the same event at Winter Olympics but not the first Olympian to win three Gold in a winter discipline as Gillis Grafström had won a figure skating title at the Summer Olympics 1920 before winning twice at the first two Winter Olympics.
Pål Bjarne Tyldum is a retired cross-country skier from Norway. Specializing in the longer distances, he won a gold medal in the 50 km event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, he won a gold medal in the 4 × 10 km relay. Additionally, he won three Olympic silver medals and seven national cross-country championships. His best result at the world championships was fourth place in the 30 km and 4 × 10 km relay in 1970.
Marie-Theres Nadig is a retired Swiss alpine skier. Aged 17, she won gold medals in the downhill and giant slalom events at the 1972 Winter Olympics. During her career Nadig won 24 world cup races and had 57 podium finishes. At the 1980 Winter Olympics, she was third in the downhill event. After retiring from competitions, between 1999 and 2005 she worked as a national coach.
Ingolf Mork was a Norwegian ski jumper who was born in Molde, and represented IL Hjelset-Fram and SFK Lyn in Oslo. He won the Four Hills Tournament in 1972, and had two victories in the Holmenkollen.

Erik Håker was the first Norwegian alpine skier to win a World Cup event. He has done that in 1971, and won four more events in 1972–1978. In 1979 he was awarded the Holmenkollen medal. Håker competed at the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics with the best result of fifth place in the downhill in 1972.

Hilkka Riihivuori is a Finnish former cross-country skier who competed during the 1970s and 1980s. She competed in three Winter Olympics, earning a total of four medals. Riihivuori also competed several times at the Holmenkollen ski festival, winning twice at 10 km and once at 5 km (1977).

Inger Aufles is a retired Norwegian cross-country skier who competed during the 1960s and 1970s. She won three Winter Olympic medals with a gold and two bronzes. Aufles also earned a silver in the 3 × 5 km relay at the 1966 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo. She won the national championships in 1968 and 1969, in the 10 km and 5 km respectively.
Alevtina Sergeyevna Olyunina is a female Soviet former cross-country skier who competed during the early 1970s for Trud Voluntary Sports Society.
Fyodor Petrovich Simashev was a Russian cross-country skier who competed at the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics. In 1968 he only entered the 15 km race and placed 26th. In 1972 he won a gold medal in the 4×10 km and a silver in the 15 km, placing sixth-eighth in the 30 km and 50 km events. He won another relay gold medal and two individual medals at the 1970 World Championships. Domestically he won twelve Soviet titles: in the 15 km (1968), 30 km, 50 km (1974) and 4×10 km relay. In 1972 he was awarded Order of the Badge of Honor.

Christian Mayer is an Austrian former alpine skier. He won the Alpine Ski World Cup Giant Slalom title in 1993/94.
Heinrich "Heini" Messner is a retired Austrian alpine skier. He competed at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics and won two bronze medals: in the giant slalom in 1968 and in the downhill in 1972.
Wiltrud Drexel is an Austrian former alpine skier and Olympic medalist. She received a bronze medal in the giant slalom at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.
