In exile in Afghanistan, Murtaza was sentenced to death in absentia by a military tribunal.

She was accused as a co-conspirator in the Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case but acquitted. Later she was became a founding member of the Pakistan Peoples Party and was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan and contributed to the formulation of the Constitution of Pakistan.
